I dobt mean The fancy one you do now, I mean the one your nan made at Christmas in 1982.

Ours -
Trifle sponges soaked in sherry laced fruit juice (from the tinned fruit) placed into the bowl, and around the edge

Tinned fruit on top.
Strawberry jelly (made with less water than normal) on top of that, to soak into the fruit and sponge .
Once that's set, custard. Then whipped cream. Hundreds and thousands on top with some jelly diamond's if you're feeling extravagant.

I know, I know, jelly has no place in a Trifle.

Share yours, and how does it differ these days?

I think jelly has definitely a place in a trifle! I love the sound of yours OP and it brings back fond memories of the trifle we used to make (birds trifle out of a b

Fortheweekend · 29/12/2020 21:40

My Nan always put glacé cherries in between the little jelly diamonds and made a little pattern with them. And the whipped cream was the tinned stuff. Bloody loved her Christmas trifles.

halfpasteleven · 29/12/2020 21:41

Posted too soon!
Birds trifle out of a box!
It had sponges and jelly crystals that we used with boiling water to pour over the sponges as the bottom layer.
Custard and "topping"on top then
hundreds and thousands just before we served it.
I loved it.

Victoria sponge Swiss roll
Strawberry jelly
Custard
Squirty cream
Hundred and thousands :)

umpteennamechanges · 29/12/2020 21:43

Our family recipe is:

  • Sponge fingers
  • Strawberry trifle made from those jelly cubes
  • Tinned fruit cocktail
  • Bird's custard
  • Whipped double cream
  • Hundreds and thousands

No booze (though I personally like Sherry).

No matter how many posh trifles I eat, Christmas is nothing without this exact trifle.

SuePreem · 29/12/2020 21:43

mine doesn't differ - tinned fruit (strawberries) at the bottom with sponge sliced together with bits of jam. then a layer of custard. Then a layer of cream.

flake on top.

my mother VERY scathing of jelly in trifle - she was gleeful that my MIL put jelly in her trifle....

Elzbells · 29/12/2020 21:44

Jam Swiss roll cut up. Mandarins from a tin. Orange jelly. Custard that always had a disgusting thick skin. Squirty cream. Hundreds and thousands.

Loved it as a child - never touched it since.

Thatwentbadly · 29/12/2020 21:44

You’re posh. We never had sprinkles or jelly diamonds other than those and the Sherry (sober alcoholic Boxing Day visitor) ours was the same.

FortunesFave · 29/12/2020 21:44

Ours had no sherry....was basic. Same as Umpteen;s above. I still prefer that.

ApolloandDaphne · 29/12/2020 21:44

Trifle sponges, mandarins from a tin with orange jelly for the bottom layer. Then custard topped with Dream Topping and sprinkles. Lovely!

umpteennamechanges · 29/12/2020 21:45

I even made an express request when asked what I wanted from my Nan's house after she died...

Her glass trifle bowl and matching small bowls.

nbee84 · 29/12/2020 21:46

Ours was always Bird's trifle with the addition of a tin of mixed fruit added to the jelly. Dm liked to stir the sponges into the jelly so that they disintegrated throughout the jelly. I never won the argument that I would like chunks of sponge.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 29/12/2020 21:46

Exactly the same as yours op.
I can still hear the squelch of it being spooned out!

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 29/12/2020 21:47

Ours was slices of jam Swiss roll at the bottom, tinned strawberries, strawberry jelly poured over and set then custard then whipped cream. Nothing on top except Christmas when my Mum would put those little flat Christmas chocolates you used to get in like a thin rectangle box on the top

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 29/12/2020 21:49

Ok so you guys seem to be missing strawberry Angel Delight...

Jelly with a tin of fruit in it (using the fruit juice from the tin to make the jelly)
Custard
Strawberry Angel Delight
Whipped Cream

This trifle contains very little that will require any chewing of any sort. It’s the only thing that can be consumed at 8pm on Christmas Day evening. It just sort of slides into the tiny gaps in your stomach..

SaltyAF · 29/12/2020 21:52

I don't do a posh trifle. I do two: one is jelly, custard and cream for the kids (topped with jelly tots); the other is sherry soaked Madeira cake (shop bought) with custard, cream and a dusting of Cadbury's chocolate.

FlamedToACrisp · 29/12/2020 21:56

Our childhood trifle had:

4 trifle sponges, cut lengthways and sandwiched back together with strawberry jam, then cut in quarters
Chopped dates
Hot custard poured over

No booze or cream. Glace cherries around the edge and grated chocolate in the centre.

Served hot or cold.

ImFree2doasiwant · 29/12/2020 21:58

@CanIGoHomeNowPlease Angel delight??????? Nooooooooo!

OP posts:
StandardLampski · 29/12/2020 21:58

I remember my mum made the oddest trifle.
It was all fine to start - sponges, sherry , fruit ... then the custard ... and then the cream on top.... but then, the jelly.Confused on the very top. She used to make it in a bowl, chop it up and then put it on the top of the cream

So very weird. Don't ever remember eating it Grin

Gingaaarghpussy · 29/12/2020 22:00

I cant remember exactly, but I do remember loving it when Devonshire custard arrived. I cannot stand cold custard unless its runny.

ImFree2doasiwant · 29/12/2020 22:00

I love that there's so many similar recipes here. And yes, has to be jelly made with cubes. 11 cubes as id eat one "raw".

I was half expecting to get a bit of a mumsnet pasting for the jelly......

OP posts:
ImFree2doasiwant · 29/12/2020 22:01

@StandardLampski that IS weird!!!

GlamourSpider · 29/12/2020 22:01

Angel delight instead of custard when I was a kid as my sis hated custard...

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2020 22:02

My mum's was almost exactly like yours, OP, but with glace cherries arranged on top instead of hundreds and thousands.

I still make it every Christmas, but leave off the glace cherries. None of your fancy modern ones here Grin

IaltagDhubh · 29/12/2020 22:03

Trifle sponges spread with strawberry jam, then tinned pears with the juice/syrup poured over the sponges, then Bird’s custard, and whipped cream with a pattern on top done with a fork and sprinkles around the edge. Lovely.
