Lapland Day Trip

Hi Mums...

Any advice on a Lapland day trip. I know this won’t be going ahead any time soon because of the current crisis but it’s our 10th wedding anniversary in 2022 and we’d love to take the children to Lapland.

I have no idea where to start. A day trip is much more affordable. Has anyone been on a day trip, can you recommend?

Thank you xxx

I've been but did camping type stuff so not sure that would be what you're after

Actually I once went to St Petersburg then up to russian lapland and across to Finland. Some amazing sights and I think Petersburg is very much a couples type place.

I went to Finland for a week - tbh it took me half the day just to get all my layers on Grin. But I know some of the holiday companies do day trips - I think Canterbury is one. Any way you could make it 2/3 days as you have a while to save up? I can’t help thinking it’s a lot of faff for a day!

There’s a great Facebook group full of people who have been many times who could help you out, called Lapland Holiday Chat.

If you want to make it more about the DCs then Rovaniemi makes sense, as you have the home of Santa, all the trips like reindeer safari etc will be available there and it’s right near the airport so you don’t waste time travelling. It’s not very far north though so would need to be December onwards to ensure snow.

Yeah I forgot to say, I think you'l need more than a day but you can do it cheap.

I did this a few years ago with my daughter who was about 7 at the time. It was a long way to go for the day (4 hours flight each way) with only about 4 hours to spend doing all the activities by the time you get all the gear and get to the village where everything happens.

Saying that it was much more affordable and I think I’d have been bored (and freezing!) with more than one or two days.

We went in 2018 for one day. Dc were 6&8 and loved it. It's a very long day but worth it. I was worried we wouldn't have enough time on the ground but there's very time little wasted. We got all our kit at the airport, then straight on a sled to the village. Everything was within a couple of minutes' walk of the centre point and well organised. There is plenty to do for the six (?) hours on the ground. I'm sure the bigger places with overnight stays have more to do but we had plenty in our one day.

We did a 3 night trip in 2012 and then the price difference between the day trip and the longer trip was minimal - went with Thomson and was around £2.2k for the 4 of us but think prices have gone up a lot since. It was amazing and would strongly recommend it though wait until youngest is at least 5 as it is seriously cold, -27C when we were there though we hit a cold week. Ours was including Christmas Day which was magical. I'ld especially recommend the reindeer and husky safaris that was included in ours as well as a fireworks dinner, 3 nights B&B at hotel with swimming pool / spa, elves, gingerbread making, crossing Artic circle etc, we all loved it. Daylight hours are very short but its all organised around that and you aren't actually outside that much - there's restaurants and cafes etc on the trips you can go in to warm up. We were based at Rovaniemi and loads of snow when we were there. Think the day trip is a condensed version - it is a seriously long day but if your kids are at an age where they can stay awake and cheerful for a long day will be great as well.

I would really try and do 3 days if you can.

We did the day trip with Canterbury travel. It was great however we were really unlucky as it was -27°c the day we went. The kids got so cold early on, on advice we went straight to see Father Christmas and they were too cold to enjoy that part.

We went to have hot chocolate inside and put our layers on properly and everything was great for the rest of the day. It was really magical. If we had ensured layers were on/tucked in etc plus not rushed off to Santa we would have been fine.

If we had been there for 3 days it wouldn't have mattered as the days either side were considerably warmer, the same happened to a friend but as they were there a few days they just spent time on the hotel doing activities put on for the kids on the mega cold day.
