Can you become intolerant to caffeine/coffee?

I normally have two cups of coffee at home a day which I’m fine with. One first thing and another mid afternoon.

I sometimes have a coffee if I’m out and about, normally a Starbucks sometimes a coffee at my local gym.

The last three times I’ve had a take out coffee I’ve felt really weird. First one at an independent place, next time at the gym and then today had a hot chocolate at cafe nero........not even sure hot chocolate has caffeine in.

But felt terrible, heart was racing, palpitations, thought I was going to faint, felt really spaced out, felt sick. Lasted about 30 mins each time. I don’t have anxiety, I’m sure it wasn’t a panic attack. I’m the most laid back person going.

Could it be hormonal? I was like that when I was first pregnant and my friend has recently had similar which she believes is related to the menopause.

I only had coffee or tea with caffeine at work, pre-lockdown. During lockdown I carried on with my decaff versions at home (as I'd been trying to avoid caffeine in the evenings for better sleep).

When we were finally able to meet up in the summer, I met people for coffee at outdoor cafes and had my usual pre lockdown coffee. I had similar issues to OP the first couple of times, and now I only have decaff versions. There are some good flavoured decaff options around.

This also happens to me now, since having a period of a few months when I wasn't drinking coffee. Once I went back to it, I got full on palpitations etc.

Common as you get older, sorry!

I can’t take coffee at all now, it started causing really bad stomach problems (burning and pain), after years of drinking it with no issues.

It took a good while for me to work out it was the coffee causing it.

PinkPlantCase · 29/12/2020 16:22

Are you on any other medication OP? I was on some tablets once that didn’t mention that they could interact with caffeine at all but coffee and cola made me feel drunk!!

Spaced out and heart racing etc. As you described. I’m long off those tablets but just drink decaf stuff now.

Pinkbubbles12 · 29/12/2020 16:39

Yes, i used to drink all sorted with caffeine in it.
Now i can't have any, started off like you so cut it outz once had it by accident and my god i thought i was having a heart attack.

Ive asked for decafe and been given wrong sometimes and can tell straight away as my heart races

I seem to be really sensitive to caffeine since I had my second child. At home I only drink decaf, but if we go to a coffee shop I usually get regular caffeinated and can really feel it especially if I’ve had a coke too. I just can’t sleep no matter how tired I am, also makes me feel panicky, it’s a really strange sensation. Does anyone know why you can become more sensitive to caffeine as you get older?

I have to be careful with caffeine. A lot of coffee is made with two shots of coffee, I sometimes forget to check and then I get all those symptoms. I also always feel worse if I forget to ask for a skinny. Full fat milk makes me feel yuck. I'm trying to stick to only one coffee a day, in the morning.

Happened to me from around age 30. It makes me feel awful if I have more than one cup of tea a day. Palpitations and awful anxiety.
