How much do you spend on home decoration per year?

We've lived in our house for 10 years and haven't really done masses of decorating since we moved in. We've occasionally replainted the hallway or kitchen when necessary, put up some wallpaper in DDs room, but that's it. Oh, and I bought some new sofas to replace the ones trashed during the toddler years

But now I'm feeling like our house is a bit dated.

We had a quote for new flooring downstairs which came in at around £2000. If we get the new flooring I'd ideally want to change the dining table to match the wood tones of the floor, And i think it's time for our massive IKEA toy storage to be replaced with something smaller (now the DC are a bit older and don't play with as many toys). But all this extra stuff is now adding up and DH is starting to look a bit green at the prospect of spending quite so much.

I'd suggest thinking of it as a % of income and value of your property; averaged out over the years you haven't done anything. This might help you get a better point of comparison that also doesn't vary wildly with others' on the basis of income differences and for people who will come by this thread with expensive taste. We just bought a house in the US for example and spent a bloody fortune doing it up, but won't need to touch it for years plus we increased the value through modernisation. Remember, you can sell old stuff and also 'hack' IKEA furniture e.g. I love Anthropologie furniture but if I'm on a mandated work break I'll pop to IKEA, get a TARVA and recreate it myself - fun and money saving!
