Lazy, unmotivated, self conscious and prone to injury- how can I get fit?

Title says it all really. Tried couch to 5k, get injured, either pain in shins or pain in foot, even though I love running and have a running machine.
Feel embarrassed to exercise and I'm so unfit. Have been working at home since March so activity levels are low.
Any suggestions please?

I’m going to just start walking 10,000 steps and going to do the 30 days with Adrienne yoga.

I'm 42 and starting to hurt when I bend! Would yoga or pilates help with this?

Start with walking on the flat. The gradually move to slopes. Build up the muscle before you tackle anything else.

Yes! Do a little every day rather than aiming for heroics straight away

I agree about Adrienne's yoga - she does different lengths of time and levels of difficulty from 5 minute breaths to long intense flows.

You could also try Walk at Home by Leslie Sansome - she does a very easy but effective walking/marching workout.

Also, get hold of a pair of hand weights of about 3-4kg each and a kettlebell of 8kg, and do some basic weights and body weight sessions. I found a no jumping weights session online this morning, ideal if you want to avoid injury. And Kettlebells by Amy's 8-10 minute session is great. Within a couple of days you start to feel stronger and more energetic from it.

Me too. Also fast800.

I have now let things get to the point i am breathless walking up a hill (I ran a marathon 3 years ago FFS) 🙄

thetrees · 29/12/2020 08:36

I'm going to do exactly that too - 10 000 steps today and Fast 800. Will add Yoga with Adrienne too, I've been meaning to do that for ages

MrsMiaWallis · 29/12/2020 08:40

4kg hand weights are heavy if you aren't used to them. I bought 1.5kg and did the Pahla B beginners workouts (shes aimed at 50 + but good for any age imo) for about 4 months before moving onto 3kg.

I was injured all the time from 44 onwards. Hrt and vitamin d sorted that!

Verrucapepper · 29/12/2020 08:42

Shamelessly place marking tho I probably won’t try any of it!

Aahotep · 29/12/2020 08:45

I have started walking. I am aiming to get my 10,000 steps.
I walk around the block a few times (1200 steps a go) then go out for an hour's walk at some point.
Going to try and keep it up then add in something else.

stripey1 · 29/12/2020 08:49

If you like running but it hurts it might be a technique or treadmill setup or footwear thing, you could look into approaches like Chi Running, change incline, ask in a specialist running trainers shop, or resources like Runners World might shed some light?

gannett · 29/12/2020 09:08

Proper running shoes that suit how you run are really important - get your gait measured at Runners World (when restrictions allow), don't just buy off the shelf.

Stretching before and after you run is also really important especially as you get older. It's tedious doing it properly and I resent it all the time but it's a must.

MrsMiaWallis · 29/12/2020 09:50

I don't believe in the running shoe thing unless you have serious foot issues- controversial so don't listen to me - once I was fitter and stronger I could buy wny decent pair from sportshoes.com and they have always been fine - brooks, asics,.saucony, all perfectly ok without a gait analysis

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 29/12/2020 10:24

I’d recommend Lucy Wyndham-Read’s walking workouts on YouTube, they’re 15 mins and v low impact but still get your heart going. Plus you can just watch and copy, so blast some good music and you’re done in no time!

And another vote for yoga with Adrienne, the 30-day challenges are excellent (she has a new one starting in January)

cheeseisthebest · 29/12/2020 18:03

Thank you really helpful
