FozzyB13 · 28/12/2020 18:46

My son has had about 10 really bad nosebleeds this week and theyve been like a bloodbath every time sometimes they have just come on and sometimes its because he has picked his nose but he has just had another one there literally from pinching his nose because of a bad smell? Does anyone elses child suffer? Thanks

When my daughter was low in iron she had nosebleeds. They stop if you put a cold can on the neck.

My son used to get them horrendously, especially at this time of year due to the dry air from central heating.
He got his nose cauterised at the doctors.
A humidifier might help in the meantime.

Aahotep · 28/12/2020 19:05

Both of mine had them, it runs in our family.
They aren't really dangerous unless they go on for hours.
As pp said, it's probably because the air is dry with the central heating on

My daughter has them, usually they coincide with a change in the weather for her but she also had low iron and had to have medicine from the doctor which stopped them being so bad, I’d go into her room some mornings and her cot would be plastered in blood and so would she they were so bad!

My DS4 gets them - real gushers. He has antibiotic nasal cream which heals the inside of his nose and stops them very effectively.

Wotrewelookinat · 28/12/2020 22:33

Very common in kids. 2 of my 3 DDs have had a blood vessel in their nose cauterised. It’s quick and painless. GP referred them to ENT for it.

My DS used to especially in the hay fever season, I suffer from nosebleeds also, so did DM, a dry atmosphere or a cold does it for me. I'm sure it must run in the family though. I never go anywhere without tissues with me as I find the mess is the worst thing

How old is your son?

Your post describes my son from between the ages of about six and 12.

He's 14 now and while he does still get a nosebleed every few weeks, he has grown out of the frequent bloodbath nosebleeds, as doctors predicted.

FozzyB13 · 29/12/2020 08:40

Hes 8? Never suffered but this week just been constant just a touch sets it off

I had nosebleeds as a child and still do. It tends to be one nostril more than the other and I find there is a spot high up on my right side nostril that is sensitive and my nose can start bleeding if I accidentally pressing on it when I wash my face or something

crazycrofter · 29/12/2020 11:15

Just a random thought but could it be covid? We’ve all had covid over the last 2 weeks but my son didn’t have any of the 3 main symptoms, just aches/tiredness - and a massive nosebleed. When I filled in the test and trace stuff I noticed that nosebleeds is one of the many symptoms they ask about.

daisydalrymple · 29/12/2020 11:21

Was also going to say it can be a symptom of Covid.

FozzyB13 · 29/12/2020 12:04

Oh god i didnt know that he hasnt been anywhere to catch it?

OP posts:
daisydalrymple · 29/12/2020 14:46

I didn’t know either, but I got my positive Covid on Christmas Eve and as pp says, I noticed it’s on the list.
Does he have any other kind of symptoms for Covid at all though?
There are plenty of normal valid reasons for nose bleeds in children, so try not to let this worry you. Maybe ring GP surgery for reassurance?

FozzyB13 · 29/12/2020 14:52

No no symptoms at all

Used to get them really bad myself as a child. Cauterized more than once. Ice pack on back of neck helps stop it.

MrsDThomas · 29/12/2020 15:16

My DD is 16 has bad bouts. Like a tap. Bothers me more than her.

BackforGood · 29/12/2020 20:21

My dd had them from aged about 2 or 3 and they gradually eased off by about 16 yrs. Still happens occasionally if it is hot.

NowellSingWe · 29/12/2020 20:33

Some people just have spates of them. When the weather changes, because of central heating, because of nose picking, because of almost anything really.
Make sure he knows how to deal with them, particularly if they happen in the night. It's likely he'll grow out of them.
