Car accident, can't quite believe we are all ok

Just venting really- driving on A road I think around 50-69, know not more than 60 as I have a limiter and use it. Broad daylight and dry. Junction on my right, nothing waiting to turn out right across my path , car turning out left to head north. Then suddenly a white car is in front of me having come up to the junction on my right and shot straight out. I braked, looking for room to avoid them, thought we would hit them for sure, it was so close. They kept going, I didn't hit them but had slowed to a full stop to avoid them and the car behind me then hit us. It was old and clearly a write off, my car is only 18months old and has relatively minor bumper and boot damage, nothing buckled, all perfectly Drivable. The driver of the other car was very shocked and their passenger clearly in a lot of pain. They had a significant condition already.
The white car that caused this drove away, not a mark on them. It was so so close. I can't believe I didn't hit them, I can't believe my car is basically intact, I can't believe my kids and dh who were in the car with me are ok.
We ended up with police as the other car couldn't be safely moved plus an ambulance. I was totally, totally fine, drive home, then couldn't stop shaking. Currently in hot bath which I think has done the trick. Insurance claim logged, police sending email with all their details.
I can't believe we are ok. I can't believe the white car did that and didn't stop. Poor driver behind was so upset, I presume it will all be on her insurance and she's lost her car. All because Some arse wouldn't wait at a junction. Her friend was hurt because the arse wouldn't wait.
Things to be thankful for: the lovely people who stopped to help, my medical student dd who could help the injured person, the police and ambulance - beautiful people! That my car took care of us all. That the little car behind took care of those people as best it could. Just can't believe it really.

Hugs for you, I know how scary those near-misses are! And well done on your quick reactions and managing not to hit the arse.

And it's why the car behind should've been at least 70m away (ie 6 car lengths). Please don't hold yourself responsible AT ALL for them driving into you.

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/12/2020 17:36

Scary stuff.

Although it totally sounds like the fault of the white car the car behind you was going g too fast or was too close. If you had chance to stop, they should have as well. At least with the damage being to your rear end they should be able to argue it. White car should have stopped but even if they had I think it would all go on the insurance of the car which hit you.

TitsOot4Xmas · 28/12/2020 17:38

Which is precisely why a dash cam is a good idea.

Princessbanana · 28/12/2020 17:41

Make sure and replace your car seats for your children!!! I would assume you will claim off the car that ran into the back of you? If so, you also need to claim off their insurance for the cost of your car seats!! Please cut the straps and dump the ones that have been involved in the accident, these are only ment to withstand ONE crash!!! Glad you are all ok, I’ve had a few close calls myself with idiots on the road! Also, invest in a good dash cam for front and back of your new car, worth there weight in gold!!

Trumplosttheelection · 28/12/2020 17:43

Thanks, yes that's a good point about the dash cam. Might treat myself.....
I know the car behind should have been able to stop but what's done is done. They saw the white car too. I think they saw it pull out whereas I saw it when it was almost level with me iyswim so I guess the car behind had more time but not enough. My car is a reasonable spec with clearly very good brakes, theirs was nearly 20 year old. I would love to know whether the white car saw us before they committed to the move, broad daylight and running lights on so should have been very visible but they were so close it makes you wonder.

It's ok no car seats to replace, kids are 22, 19 and 13!

Sorry this happened. Try not to dwell on what might have been. You are all safe and that's the main thing.

Thisendsnow · 28/12/2020 17:57

@Princessbanana you learn something new everyday!

SynchroSwimmer · 28/12/2020 18:09

After your warm bath, pyjamas, blanket, warm drink and relax.
Just accept that your mind will keep replaying it for a while.
Try and find a distraction - a tv programme
Your mind will wander
Treat yourself gently and kindly, hunker down.
If you wake in the night - I find TV helps - to stop the mind
Be assured that by this time next week it will have faded for you a little, and more so as time goes by.

AlwaysCheddar · 28/12/2020 18:11

Get your car checked. Just because there’s no obvious damage, if your car has crumple zones then they could be compromised and need replacing.

snappyoldfart · 28/12/2020 18:13

Oh bless you the shock can take a good few days to recover from you've done the right thing, hot baths nice drinks and feel safe.

Make sure the teens are all the same it takes a bit longer for it to sink in with teens, I'm sure you will be looking after them but how scared for you all.

Keep an eye on any weird aches and pains as well as you can get some delayed injury's neck, back etc even from what may seem like a small jolt and head to the GP if you do.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 28/12/2020 18:15

The car behind you must have been going very fast, given that they had slightly more warning of what the white car was doing than you did but still couldn't brake in time.

Trumplosttheelection · 28/12/2020 18:28

Thank you all. Got my cosy clothing on! Definitely a bit freaked out. I just can't believe I didn't hit them, it was right in front of me. It's an A road so I think the car behind was doing close to 60 but had reduced right down. Given the relative lack of damage to us we thought about 20? Will keep an eye on kids, they are busy looking after me bless them!

You poor thing. Some people (white car) shouldn’t be on the road. It’s dangerous driving and their licence should be taken away.

Just to warn you (I’ve been in a couple of accidents) you will probably ache like hell in the morning once the adrenaline wears off. Go to A&E or you GP if you need to.

Trumplosttheelection · 28/12/2020 19:24

Will do. My arms are a bit sore but it's just in the muscles, from gripping the wheel I think. Neck ok and everybody else's seems the same. Will seek assessment if any change. We had come to a stop so it was just the speed of the other smaller car impacting on my big bus.

OP posts:
Trumplosttheelection · 28/12/2020 19:26

And I agree @TheDoctorDances this was quite simple dangerous behaviour and I think it's a great shame they likely won't be held to account for it.

OP posts:
purplecorkheart · 28/12/2020 19:29

Please make sure that you get your car checked as the damage may not be obvious but could compromise the safety of the card. Don't be surprised if you or the kids get upset later on.

mineofuselessinformation · 28/12/2020 19:33

OP, take it easy for the next few days, and keep yourself dosed up in painkillers - you may well have hurt yourself more than you realise at the moment. And of course, see your GP if necessary.
It's a horrible shock!
I had someone drive into my stationary car last year (I watched them doing it - couldn't do anything to stop it), then had a deer walk out of the side of the road into the loan car I had while mine was being repaired....
You couldn't make it up - and I started the conversation to the loan car company with 'You'll never believe this, but....'
It was all sorted out in the end, but as you can imagine was stressful at the time.
I hope my story's given you a laugh, and that you're not too sore. Thanks

Trumplosttheelection · 29/12/2020 20:48

Thanks all. Physically we all seem fine. I was prepared for soreness today but am fine. God bless seatbelts and modern car building! Repairs booked for next week, insurers being v helpful.
Only slight issue is feeling shaky when driving tonight, I'm just waiting to be hit from behind. But that will pass I'm sure,
