Are you sending your children back to school in January?

I assumed people would be pleased the schools are remaining open (probably because that’s how I feel) but the two people I’ve spoken to about it this morning are disgusted. Both are SAHM so don’t need their children in.

Yes I will send both of mine - we live in tier 2 but they go to school over the county border which is tier 3. I would be more gutted about schools closing as this would like mean no swimming, gymnastics, football etc...and at the minute as it’s all they’re allowed to do it’s the only thing really getting them through! I’d start to have serious concerns about their mental health if all clubs were stopped.

God - yes

Sirzy · 28/12/2020 11:17

Ds is due a test on 15th January which was listed as urgent last March. I am seriously weighing up keeping him home for that first two weeks to avoid the chances of it ending up needing to be cancelled due to isolation

No. Keeping them at home until things look better. I don’t want to take any chance of them bringing it home whilst hospitals are full just in case it makes one of us ill enough to need treatment.

Rockbird · 28/12/2020 11:19

Primary yes, she hated being off. My yr8 won't be back till the following week at the earliest. She's delighted!

MarshaBradyo · 28/12/2020 11:20

If open, yes

Glittertwins · 28/12/2020 11:27

Mine are going in as soon as they are allowed

MegaClutterSlut · 28/12/2020 11:32

Just had an email this morning. Dds secondary school is only open on the 4th for year 11s. The rest will do home learning (tier 4)

BogRollBOGOF · 28/12/2020 11:35

Of course they're going in. If primary is open, my kids are in. They need their peers to learn and develop socially. I cannot be all things to them. They need more than me at home.

MegaClutterSlut · 28/12/2020 11:36

Forgot to add it looks like its only for the week

vinoandbrie · 28/12/2020 11:36

If the school is open, my children will be in it!

RosieLemonade · 28/12/2020 11:38

My DD will 100% be in as much as she can be. She’s an only child so doesn’t see other children unless she’s at school.
All my friends keep saying is “It doesn’t make sense that they can see their schoolmates but not their family” 😴

Mine will go back if they can (yrs4 and 6). They absolutely need the structure of school both academically and socially). We're in tier 4, but there have only been a tiny number of cases relating to school.

PontiacBandit · 28/12/2020 11:39

Yes, they need to learn and we need to work.

pusscatsinblankets · 28/12/2020 11:40

(Relating to OUR school, that should say).

It's so frustrating! Kids being able to access education means that sacrifices need to be made elsewhere. I accept it. But lots of people won't Sad
IndecentFeminist · 28/12/2020 11:42

Yes. We had one case last term. Assuming it'll be worse this term, but they want to be in and so do I. (I work there.)

Same we are T4 but have only had 3 cases at the school the whole way through.

Doubt our primary school will be shut. G. Manchester.

Am on countdown now, can't wait for school to restart. Shit time of year to be off. No family or friends to visit, no cinema or restaurants. Fed up of the cold flooded parks.

School is not more dangerous than it was in say October. I dont think they should ever have been shut. Homeschool is awful. I work, the kids hate not seeing friends, the education is non-existent. Our school is really bad at it and online learning is no substitute for teacher time. Plus it's terrible for safeguarding. I really feel for the less well off children whose parents wont homeschool and whose teachers aren't able to check in them as much stuck home with inadequate or abusive parents. Neglect is rife. Schools need to stay open.

badlydrawnbear · 28/12/2020 11:43

Yes. They are in primary school in tier 3. School COVID contacts put 4 year groups so about half the school into isolation the weekend after the end of term (not 1 contact bursting multiple bubbles as happened earlier this month, as my DC had different end dates for their isolation). They and I need school for our mental health, they need to see their friends and I need to not go back to doing 3 jobs in a day (2 x primary school teachers then a night shift as a nurse) and I need the space without them to deal with the end of my marriage. They also need a decent education as I am not a good teacher. I am lucky enough to be eligible for keyworker places if the criteria is the same as in the spring, so my DC would still go even if schools closed but only on days that I was at work and they probably wouldn’t be taught anything as it would be impossible for teachers to staff keyworker provision and do online teaching.

sosotired1 · 28/12/2020 11:57

I very probably won't. My children need to go in for academic, social and all the other reasons that other PPs have listed... but I am clinically vulnerable (due to more than one condition so actually could be more vulnerable in practise).

My children have an already sick mother and I can't afford to be more sick or to risk leaving them with no mother. Those are the kind of choices some us feel we have to make.

I sent mine in in the summer and for the autumn term as I felt benefits didn't outweigh risks. Looking at the very intelligent posts on the thread about daily, rates graphs etc. means I don't feel that now...

sosotired1 · 28/12/2020 11:58

risks didn't outweigh benefits.

SueEllenMishke · 28/12/2020 12:01

Yes. 100%.
DS has thrived since being back in September and we need to work.

lollipoprainbow · 28/12/2020 12:06

Yes I have to work !

zigaziga · 28/12/2020 12:08

It depends on whether we have the choice doesn’t it?!

But if we do yes without hesitation.
