Ferrous sulphate help

Was put on these as low levels. I read to take 30-60 mins before food. It made me horribly nauseous. Read you can take with food if necessary to ease this. They have also given me diarrhoea (only first thing in the day). I have to up taking them to 2 then 3 times a day over the next week or so.
Any tips to help? They are making me feel so sick.

I’ve taken iron for decades and luckily not been ill.

If this type is making you ill you can compare it with something like Spatone or Floradix as they are a lot easier to take.

A friend of mine used to take her’s with a glass of fresh orange juice and that stopped her from feeling nauseous.

Thank you. I used to have spatone but I'm not sure it will be high enough dose for what I need? Will need to research it. Thank you

Ask for ferrous fumerate instead the sulphate did this to me too and they swapped them.

I take ferrous fumarate instead (just as strong as sulphate but not as bad on the digestive system). It doesn’t give me the nausea and stomach pains that the sulphate did although it does constipate and bloat me a bit

Iron tablets are hideous
I refused to take them during pregnancy due to how unwell they made me!

Dr kept pushing them at me because it’s a lot cheaper than doing an infusion. Eventually they had to give me the infusion. I wasn’t living like that for months getting upset stomachs daily whilst already having HG!

Cleverpolly3 · 28/12/2020 11:01

The infusion made a huge difference to me too

I third ferrous fumarate.

Ferrous fumerate is tolerated more easily. I take 210mg of it every day for long term anaemia due to lupus. Spatone etc won’t have nearly the same dosage as proper iron tablets.

Thank you all. I will call the GP this week to see if they can change them.

@Borderscotch, I forgot to mention, you can purchase Ferrous fumarate over the counter at some chemists.

Borderscotch · 28/12/2020 12:10

Oooh excellent, have a fantastic local pharmacy so will pop in there. Thank you

spatone or floradix are great for maintaining iron levels but for getting the levels up you need a lot more than that.

as pp, there are other formulations you can ask for. I was prescribed a duodenal formulation that only dissolved in the intestines that didn't make me feel sick.

good luck! anaemia is the pits, you will feel much better with more normal iton levels.
