Sandwiches in shops

Why is it so hard to just get sandwiches in supermarkets or coops on plain white bread? I find all the bits you get in the bread disgusting, get stuck in my teeth and i'm often allergic.

Shop bought sarnies are always nasty. I hate mayo and it seems to be in 99% of them. The bread is cheap like the 'best of both' and they are cold! I like my sandwiches at room temp (filling chilled obviously). Unfortunately I am a slattern and never have anything in to make sandwiches for work.
Making my own is my New Year's resolution (like it has been for the last 30 odd Hmm).

I went on a course for a related reason and we were told supermarket sandwiches can be a week old by the time you eat them 🤢

ApolloandDaphne · 28/12/2020 09:20

If you have allergies perhaps you would be best making your own sandwiches. If you are stuck and need to buy something could you buy a plain white roll from the bakery section and some ham and construct one yourself? The kids who frequent my local supermarket during their lunch break appear to do this.

Totally agree OP.

I don't like the taste of brown bread and I certainly don't want any seeds/nuts etc.

The white bread choices are always really boring/non existent.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 28/12/2020 10:02

If you are fortunate enough to be near an independent sandwich shop check them out. Infinitely nicer sandwiches, all personal adaptations accepted!

I don't get why they do it for most of them. 90% of the choices are brown bread now with seeds/nuts. There was one I liked they still had in white and I went earlier to the coop for some bits and pieces and thought i'd get a sandwich and even that option now was brown bread with the accompanying seeds and nuts (which i'm allergic to).

You can never just get anything plain or standard anymore.

It because they feel they can charge more for "fancy" bread. Same way you know get burgers on Brioche buns rather than a plain bun.

StarlightLady · 28/12/2020 12:10

It’s called supply and denand. There are not a lot of white bread sandwiches available purely because a lot of people don’t want them.

How do you know that?

AgeLikeWine · 28/12/2020 12:25

I agree. The ubiquitous ‘malted’ brown bread in so many supermarket sandwiches is disgusting. I find M&S sandwiches use less of this stuff and are generally much nicer than the others. Waitrose sandwiches, in particular, are crap.

If they are more popular I don't know why. They're horrible.

One of my strange weaknesses is the crap cheese savoury sandwiches my corner shop sells.
They really are shit, but strangely addicive and even better if you add crisps to them.

StarlightLady · 28/12/2020 14:27

@HughPewBarneyMcGrew - l know that because l have a relative in the sector, who gave up stocking white bread because people were not buying it.

ElizaLaLa · 28/12/2020 14:37

I'm surprised they are doing this because of nut allergies. How many people must they be alienating if nuts or nut products aren't allowed on their work premises.

I find that strange, but even so are all the seeds and nuts really necessary?

The only sandwiches that I find appealing to eat are M&S. I love their Turkey Feast at this time of year. I actually don't want white bread as I only like it for toast. There is one independent supermarket where I am happy to eat their chicken, grape, scallion and mayo sandwich which comes in either white or granary.

GlowingOrb · 28/12/2020 15:08

Even in restaurants it’s getting hard to get white bread. I’ve got allergies too and most multi-grain bread is off limits. You can’t even trust anymore if the menu says wheat bread because they will sub a multi-grain without telling you. It’s also started happening with croutons in salads or soups.

Twobrews · 28/12/2020 15:18

I can't stand sliced bread so don't eat ready made, but in our corner shop all the sandwiches are on white bread. So maybe look in cheapo places.

I've never come across nuts in bread though except speciality loaves, DS2 is allergic so I'm always on the look out.

ElizaLaLa · 28/12/2020 15:20

Blame hipsters. Next thing each sandwich will come with it's own slate chopping board with all the ingredients in their own little packs.

CorianderQueen · 28/12/2020 21:14

I'd guess (don't know but my two cents) that the healthy/clean eating kick of the last 5/6 years is the reason behind this. Lots of people automatically buy brown because it's better for them.

I've also been told since I was a kid that white bread is bad for me (not that that stops me every so often).

purpleme12 · 28/12/2020 21:20

Yes I so agree!
I can do white and brown bread but I really don't like any bread with bits in so malted or seeds etc
And this is the majority of sandwiches!
It didn't used to be like this
