(Please)

If you bought your dog based on its breed please tell me-

1- what breed and why that breed?

2- what are the pros & cons of your dogs breed?

Bonus question if you don’t mind- why did you choose a female or male?

I worded it this way as I know some people get a dog regardless of its breed for example they rehomed it.
But I want to know specifically about dog breeds if you chose that breed.

I am thoroughly researching getting a dog and have been for some time now.
I want a puppy as I want to train the dog from the beginning and to know it’s background, where it came from etc.

I have looked into rehoming but under the current climate they are well sought after.
Also whenever I have looked, the only dogs available are ‘no children’ or they are already in their twilight years.
(I’ve added that bit as I know I will get some comments asking me not to buy a puppy and to get a rescue)

I only have experience of labradors and male dogs which is why I am asking.

Thanks so much!

All the St Bernard's I have encountered are very well trained, don't jump up on people, and love human company.

Not sure I’ve seen Boxer dog mentioned yet!

We’ve got 2 that we’ve had since puppies from separate breeders. The male is 4 and the female 5. Growing up I’d just always been drawn to Boxers and wanted one, DH didn’t mind on a breed so left me to choose and absolutely adores them, he was the one that lead us to get a 2nd.

Pros - Great family dog, brilliant with kids and always watching out for them.
-They protect our house and will warn us if there’s a stranger about or someone at the door, other than that they don’t bark. But the bark and look on their faces is enough to scare a intruder away.
-They are so clumsy and goofy all the time which I think I why I love them so much as there’s never a dull moment with them around!

Cons - Both have very sensitive stomachs and have to be on a very strict food diet.

  • The female sometimes can be stubborn, we’ve been very strict with bringing them up and training so they know they aren’t boss but sometimes she tries her luck.
  • We can never let them off lead as their attention span isn’t the best when they are distracted and they both develop selective hearing Grin

Boxers remain very puppy like pretty much there whole life Grin Very energetic and bouncy dogs but mine are also more than happy to snuggle up on our laps. If I was to have another Boxer I’d choose a female again as the male is definitely more needy and mischievous.

1- what breed and why that breed?
Bullmastiff.
It was my first dog after moving into my own home as a "grown up" and I'd always had Bullmastiffs. I wanted to get a breed I knew well. I'd had about 5 while I still lived at home and grew up with this breed. They're lazy, protective and well mannered.

2- what are the pros & cons of your dogs breed?
Pros:
Protective, playful but lazy, docile, trainable, well mannered, great with people.
Cons:
Strong, not known for being the best breed with other dogs, stubborn.

Bonus question if you don’t mind- why did you choose a female or male?
Male, always had males. Not sure why really!

I had been considered a sheltie, no-one has mentioned those?

We had a sheltie! Lovely little dogs.

Pros:
Loving, loyal personalities
Perfect size to sit on your lap and cuddle
Clever and easily trainable - check out the Fenton Goes Forth facebook page for some really well trained ones!
Gorgeous
Enjoy and are good at agility if you fancy that
Good with children

Cons
Need a LOT of grooming
Can be barky - ours wasn't, but she was a bit unusual for the breed, but also wasn't left home alone for long
Can be less friendly with strangers - ours was, though
Can be nervous - again ours wasn't at all

QueenofDestruction · 28/12/2020 17:05

I just stop walking and stand and tell them to sit, when they are calm again I carried on walking and a treat and repeat until they stop.

Sorry that was a reply to Bathroomwork.

I've chosen both of my dogs because they are the most beautiful breeds I have ever seen. We went for a boy with the big dog because they were supposed to be easier to train and a girl for the small dog because she's a fluffball and they look like girls 😂😂

BibbityBobbityBellend · 28/12/2020 18:55

American Akita

We like a challenge when it comes to raising dogs. They are solid, protective dogs with their own personality. They're very impressive as a breed.

Pros
Intelligent
Love to be trained and play games together
Hard to make a bond but when they do it's great
Protective of family
Don't bark at the door etc, they just watch.
Very hierarchical and seem to be wold like
They howl
Lazy

Cons
Not very affectionate - cat like in manner.
Massive prey drive so off lead is too risky.
Ignorant - you can see them listen to you and actively choose to ignore you because it doesn't suit what they want. They do listen on the second attempt but it's like a huffy teenager.
Not a healthy breed - skin issues, immune issues and food/diet issues.
Lazy
Not for first time dog owners

Apparently they are very vicious and two can take down a big grizzly. I'll believe it when I see it.

We got a boy because we always do. DPs choice.

We previously had a staff and a Rottweiler. Best dogs ever. I stupidly said I wanted a big dog who would be able to run with me. Wish we had got a staff. They don't have any cons apart from peoples negative judgements.

“Apparently they are very vicious and two can take down a big grizzly. I'll believe it when I see it.”

I’ve seen more than one bite... I can believe it tbh, they don’t snap, it’s a proper strong bite and shake - like a huge terrier. So yeah, it wouldn’t take much to convince me they could get a bear tbh, lol

BibbityBobbityBellend · 28/12/2020 19:21

@tabulahrasa I've seen one bite (been a victim of mine when he was a pup with food aggression issues and I took a chicken and stuffing sandwich from him) but taking down a bear is a big jump

I think mine would get tired before the job was done 😂 unless he tried to steal his sandwich

bluebluezoo · 28/12/2020 19:25

1- what breed and why that breed?

Yorkie :)

Many reasons. Small and portable, non shedding, easily trained, proper “dogs”, generally strong and sturdy. Great little alarm systems, good with other animals. Can go with minimal exercise, or can walk all day. Also good mousers/ratters (we live rurally)

2- what are the pros & cons of your dogs breed?

Pro’s as above. He’s a fab little dog. Has his basic commands. If you sit he’ll sit with you, but isn’t a carry around handbag dog, he’s better for basic training and being treat like any other dog.

Not many cons. Probably that he follows me round so I have to watch not to trip over him.

Mostly everyone he meets loves him.

Boy/girl wasn’t bothered as would have neutered anyway. Just he caught my eye over his sisters.

tabulahrasa · 28/12/2020 19:29

“but taking down a bear is a big jump”

See I’m going with terriers are pretty blooming lethal, makes sense that huge ones could take on a bear, lol...

Igotjelly · 28/12/2020 19:30

I have an older english bulldogge. Reason for getting I always wanted a bulldog but didn't want all the associated health problems.

Pros - friendly, excellent with children, dog friendly, none of the associated health problems of a traditional bulldog.

Cons - stubborn! Sometimes a little too friendly (thinks he's a lap dog but at 35kg really isn't!)

Got a Male as they're far less huffy than females.

FreshfieldsGal · 28/12/2020 19:35

Bearded collie

Why?
DS has SN and beardies are very patient, loving dogs. Excellent stable personality, fairly smart, fluffy coat, energetic.
Extremely friendly with everyone.
Easy to train.

Downsides
His coat can be a nightmare to groom. I get him groomed properly every 3-4 weeks which costs £80-85.
Stubborn.
Dog hair EVERYWHERE.
Suffers separation anxiety - he whines when I'm in the bathroom.
Likes to bark.

We got a male dog and had him neutered.

BibbityBobbityBellend · 28/12/2020 19:43

@tabulahrasa terriers are much scarier 😂😂😂

Pinkchocolate · 28/12/2020 19:48

I’ve got a Jack/Chi and he’s brilliant.
He’s ridiculously energetic so needs a lot of play. He’s 8 now so has mellowed slightly but he’s always been very boisterous. He’s temperamental with other dogs so is always on a lead in public, he’s better with bigger dogs than small ones like him. He malts a lot, I Hoover a million times a day and find his hair on everything.
He’s also the sweetest, most loving dog who will lick my tears and jump up on me excitedly every time I walk in a room. He toilet trained well and is fine home alone. He has a really lovely temperament and does the cutest things. I’d get another Jack in a heartbeat.

underneaththeash · 28/12/2020 19:48

We chose an Australian Labradoodle. Parents/grandparents are labradoodles too, so you can be more confident about the size.

We chose that breed as:
Medium sized
Don't drool
Trainable
Hypoallergenic
We liked the look of the dog
Not naturally aggressive
Non-shedding.

Cons
We were on a waiting list for 18 months
They need 2 decent walks a day.

We didn't choose the sex (I had no preference).

NoToMisogyny · 28/12/2020 19:50

We got a Cockapoo after a lot of research. Wanted a medium sized dog that wouldn’t shed and would be both bouncy and lovable.

And he is! I actually wanted a female but there was one boy and one girl left at the breeder’s and the girl seemed to prefer walking off to be on her own which worried me.

Pros: he’s incredibly loving and affectionate, very clever and easy to train, and is full of joy every minute of every day. There’s no greater pleasure than taking him for walks and watching his ears flap as he races to catch balls over and over again like the Duracell bunny!

Cons: he’s very hyper (probably more personality than breed!) and wants a lot of attention when he’s not either outside or asleep. Headbutts our legs to get us to play with him constantly! And he’s a Velcro dog in the house (no separation anxiety when we’re out though). My friend has a King Charles and he’s so EASY!

BathroomWork · 28/12/2020 23:53

Always a black lab for me, partly for looks and because they're the breed they use for assistance dogs, gotta be a good all rounder and easy to train! Also has to be a bitch to try and reduce any territorial peeing mostly.

I do have to say that I’ve had a few black labs and the one I’ve currently got is awful. They've all been pedigree but this one is feral! So I think although by and large even if the the breed is dependable, you do sometimes get the wild card like I’ve got.

SilverOtter · 29/12/2020 14:54

Yeah get a Vizsla, they're so regal and elegant and....utterly grim🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤢

If you chose your dog because of the type of breed answer my questions..
letsnotscaretheneighbours · 29/12/2020 15:23

@SilverOtter that absolutely made me chuckle
