Iphone charger cables and headphones

I seem to get through both at a rate of knots (nots?)

Can anyone recommend the best cost saving ones that aren't going to set fire to my house or ears please? I like the in eary ones and my phone dies within two minutes of bluetooth so they have to be wired.

Or I need to figure out if I can get a new battery but I think that is really expensive.

I don’t know how people have issues with lightning cables. Don’t get me wrong, when I was a teenager they would sometimes end up bending/splitting, but I purchased the 2m length version when I was 19 and it’s lasted for 4 years since🤷🏼‍♀️ Worth a try?

I also use the usb-type-c to lightning cable & adapter, it’s expensive but charges your device significantly faster. So you’ll spend less time charging your phone, and therefore less time using your phone whilst it’s charging, reducing the risk of overusing the cable

Vitaminsss · 27/12/2020 21:13

For earphones I use AirPods. I don’t rate wired earphones tbh.

If your phone is faulty, it’s worth contacting apple/the retailer purchased from/your insurers etc for a repair

I have a very old model phone (so it's not the new sockety bit type, it's not the oldest, but not the newest either...)

Let me try and figure out the type C thing.

Thank you for the advice though!

Its well out of warranty and not on insurance as it's so old, cannot afford a new one right now though.

This is the normal lightning cable with a longer length:
www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MD819ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-cable-2m

This is the USB type C version with faster charging, supports iPhone 5 and later:

The adapter costs £50 so at £85 in total it is expensive. Maybe try Amazon for a decent alternative?

What's your battery health like? You can look this up in your settings.

I'm currently at 86% and my phone was bought May 2019. I use it for an average of 8h+ each day according to screen time. I charge it fully overnight, then most days I need a quick top up in the afternoon.

I will only buy cables and headphones from Apple now. No matter what people say and how many 'original' cheap Amazon versions I've tried, the most durable ones are Apple. I'm tired of throwing money away on cheap ones. Yes, £30 for a pair of headphones or a cable is insane, but they last forever.

All the iPhones I've had, they reach a point when you're charging them more than you're using them. That's when I decide it's time for a new one... battery health below 75% is probably bad already. If you have an old model, it's probably just... ready to be replaced 😞 would you be open to upgrading it?

Vitaminsss · 27/12/2020 21:20

Try the brand Anker on Amazon - they’re a good manufacturer so you’ll have a high quality product that won’t burn your house down!

EileenGC · 27/12/2020 21:21

Just read your last post about not being able to afford a new one yet.

How old is your current iPhone? If in good condition - no scratches or bumps or anything like that, Apple might offer a discount off a new phone if you give them your old one.

I never buy new £900 iPhones - a model from 3/4 years ago that costs £300 is just as good. Maybe that would be even less if you can trade your old phone in?

Salapandas · 27/12/2020 21:23

Thanks, this is really helpful.

Battery health is 90% ... but bluetooth just kills it (as does spotify or strava)... I have all background apps turned off etc. It also goes from 75% to 3% in about twenty minutes some days...

I did try one of those charging bank things but it makes no difference, just something else to lug around with me and I usually forget to charge it or take it.

I could possibly manage with a trade in and some vouchers I was given for a department store for Christmas, and plus I think i have some savings tucked away.

I definitely couldn't afford the new ones, it would be the SE (and that's because I don't actually like the bigger ones...).

I've had this one for four years I think... possibly a bit more, so maybe it is time for an upgrade and I just need to spend the money and do it.

Really bad timing but I am working contracting at the moment on and off and it often means walking at night, and now it means walking without a phone a lot of the time which freaks me out!

Have you run all the latest software updates? Sometimes the phone just gets overwhelmed if running an old system.

I sympathise about the 75 to 3% in 20 min... that used to happen a lot to one of my previous phones. It's not the old SE by any chance? The one in between iPhone 5 and 6.

Having a consistent charging routine seems to help. I always charge fully overnight - I have smart charge on (not sure what the actual name of this is), so the phone doesn't overcharge or overheat. It stops at 80% and resumes charging at X minutes/hours before my alarm. I've noticed an improvement ever since doing this.

Salapandas · 27/12/2020 21:33

It's not the old SE by any chance? Yes it is....

Is this a known issue?

I would like the new SE because of the size (have problems with holding the larger ones and they always get smashed...)

OP posts:
Vitaminsss · 27/12/2020 21:37

Apple charges £49 for a battery replacement for your device, could this be an option? Would be better than constantly buying new cables and lugging around a power bank.

Go into Settings - Battery. Which applications drain your battery the most?

Salapandas · 27/12/2020 21:40

Safari Audio (40%)
Spotify (15%)
Uber (14%) - have been shielding so lots of food orders from supermarkets are on uber at the moment

It's the only phone that's given me that issue and a couple of friends had it as well. I'm the same as you, I don't like big phones. I currently have the iPhone 7 which is the largest screen I can manage Grin The new SE is still quite expensive but I've heard good things about it. iPhone 7/8 would give you the same screen size whilst being cheaper, but they're also 3 years older... and Apple stores don't sell them anymore I don't think?
Vitaminsss · 27/12/2020 21:48

Uber shouldn’t drain your battery that much as it shouldn’t be on screen for that long. Same with Spotify, which is generally used in the background.

It suggests that your device may be faulty as your battery seems to be draining too fast. Contact Apple via live chat here, they will have troubleshooting steps you can try just in case you can fix it at home:

I thought I was getting through charging cables. Now have a new phone, the old cables have sprung back into life. I think my old phone had a dodgy charging port.

Salapandas · 28/12/2020 10:57

Thank you, I am going to try apple support first. If not I will look into trading in, using vouchers and getting the new SE.

I am doing a battery reset now as well to see if that helps. To be fair my cables are cheap corner shop ones but I did original use just apple until six months ago (and battery issues were before that).

I’ve used musicmagpie eBay page to get mine and my husbands new phones (secondhand) over the last 8ish years.
They’ve come with a one year warranty and MM has been good with returns and replacements: one phone arrived with a crap battery but I returned it and got another that was fine, next one I got water in the top speaker after 6 months (had it next to the sink Blush ) and returned it saying that I couldn’t hear people during phone calls, and because it was a iPhone 5 rather than replace it they gave me my money back no quibbles and I used that to get a 7s.

Salapandas · 28/12/2020 12:47

Thanks everyone, I am going to order a new phone... just reading reviews of the new SE. And I will get the extra long charging cable and pluggy bit as reccomended and some wireless headphones (no headphone socket on the new SE....) Thanks for all the help!

A new battery takes an hour, I got my last one free. I use the amazon woven cables and the one I have has lasted 6 years now.
