I need to invest in a good set of saucepans.. what brand would you recommend? Ideally non stick and for a gas hob.

Thank you

I know you said non-stick, but I'd recommend Stellar stainless steel pans for a gas hob. I've had some of mine for approximately 20 years & they are still in really good condition, they definitely don't look 20 years old, the handles aren't loose, they're pretty easy to clean, & different pans are available with a range of lids - my older ones have steel lids but I bought some a few years ago with glass lids. Some of the pans have been dropped a few times & only one has the tiniest dent which doesn't affect cooking performance or ease of cleaning.

They're also relatively lightweight (which is why I chose them instead of Le Creuset or similar).

SillyBub · 27/12/2020 19:55

Le Creuset stainless steel pans. I know they are ridiculously expensive but they are absolutely worth it. They go through the dishwasher every day and after 8 years look as good as new. Honestly. We also have a gas hob.

We've literally just finished our 7000th "aren't those pans amazing" conversation 🤣.

TreacleHart · 27/12/2020 19:56

A few years ago we invested in a German make called Woll .
They are very well made and sturdy. We got rid of our Stellar saucepans because of them. I wanted to renew the frypan but sadly it doesn't seem like they are available in the UK now although I have seen a few on Amazon.

Another vote for stainless steel. I have a set of John Lewis stainless steel which I bought in 1993. I still use them daily. The frying pan that came with the set was non stick and had been replaced many times.

NannyR · 27/12/2020 20:01

I've had Ikea 365 stainless steel saucepans for about ten years and they still look great. I don't have nonstick saucepans as it's not needed for cooking veg, pasta, rice etc. I have circulon infinite frying pans and saute pan, they are also ten years old and the non stick is still intact and working well.

78percentLindt · 27/12/2020 20:01

I have a set of John Lewis classic stainless steel ones, which are 30 plus years old. They were pricy at the time but worth every penny, only one has any sign of a dent or mark. I have the universal steamer as well. I have the ones with the stainless steel lid, but they also do glass lids if you prefer.

Sorry to butt in, but are stainless steel not a pita to clean?

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 27/12/2020 20:03

Yeah, stuff stainless, it's anything but and needs wire wool.

I'm a big fan of Circulon pans, I'm buying them slowly as other pans age out. They're wipe-clean, very sturdy nonstick, and dishwasherable.

redastherose · 27/12/2020 20:04

I would recommend Circulon. I've had two sets and still have all pans of both even though the first set is probably 12 or more years old. Non stick still working and I use them on a gas hob. The set I got with the veg steamer is my favourite and most used pan.

muddledmidget · 27/12/2020 20:04

I have the same pans as @CharityGoatEscape - had a set that I inherited from my MIL that were at least 20 years old, had been through the dishwasher everyday and scrubbed with a scourer and they still looked pristine. The base of one was slightly warped after I'd let a pan of boiled eggs boil dry for over an hour... Just bought a brand new set suitable for my new induction hob but have passed on the old set

Chemenger · 27/12/2020 20:06

I would go for stainless every time. I’ve had mine, Raymond Blanc from John Lewis for about 10 years and other than some scratches on the bases from the hob they look good as new. They’re not hard to clean, I mostly just stick them in the dishwasher.

safariboot · 27/12/2020 20:07

Yet another to say good quality stainless steel last for ages. And for most things, as long as you don't outright start a fire in the pan cleaning is fine.

That said some cooking works better with non stick. I reckon a good quality non stick frying pan is worth having.

doctorhamster · 27/12/2020 20:11

I really rate scoville for non stick

cherrypie790 · 27/12/2020 20:11

I've got a set of Stellar 7000 self draining ones, and a collection of Le Crueset that I have to guard with my life to stop my stupid DH from putting in the dishwasher............

The Stellar ones are amazing quality - I've had my set for around 6 years and they're as good as new.

Blufandango · 27/12/2020 20:12

I'll second @NannyR, IKEA 360 are excellent and they go in the oven which I love. I like them so much I want more, but I have no need for them! I've had other pans where the gas flame has melted or weakened the handle but never an issue with these. They are not non stick because I think when non stick does stick they are a pain to clean (saying that I've avoided non stick for a very long time and my aunty tells me they actually work now).

goingtotown · 27/12/2020 20:17

Prestige Stainless steel set of 4 saucepans with copper bottoms, used every day & still as good as new.. They cost £100 in 1989.

pinkcattydude · 27/12/2020 20:23

Judge Vista stainless steel is amazing can take all the battering and you can’t destroy them. Pouring spout measurements inside can’t fault them

tobee · 27/12/2020 20:24

I asked about the cleaning because I've had nightmare cleaning session after dc made themselves scrambled eggs in stainless steel in a holiday let 🤯

CharityEscapeGoat · 27/12/2020 20:25

Definitely. I'd agree that a decent quality frying pan or sauté pan are the only non-stick pans I'd consider. I had a circulon frying pan previously, it was ok but considering the cost, I didn't feel it was worth the money. We have granite type non-stick now, much more resilient so far, & the non-stick is pretty good.
78percentLindt · 27/12/2020 23:02

My stainless steel pans go in the dishwasher and rarely get much more. Occasionally they need a bit of a soak before washing. I have never needed to use a metal scourer.
I do have a LeCreuset casserole dish which can be a pain to clean and we have gone through more non stick frying pans at various price points than I want to remember.

Empressofthemundane · 27/12/2020 23:04

All-Clad

Olivetreekeeper · 27/12/2020 23:10

I've recently bought a set of Le Creuset stainless steel for my new induction hob (but they're suited to all types) and they are an absolute dream. I won't look back! You can often get them in sales for a set or go to an outlet store for a more reasonable price.
