gas oven trips the electrics after a few minutes

It started yesterday but it was tripping them immediately yesterday. This morning it tripped them within about a minute. Now it's taking a few minutes.

Any ideas what could be causing it or any quick fixes I could attempt before I have to call out a repair man? I initially though it could be that someone spilled some water down the back of the oven onto the socket or the fuse but I've pulled it out and it's dry and also plugged it into a different socket. I also thought it could be the fuse but surely if the fuse had gone it would trip immediately like it did today?

You also cannot switch it on with a lighter. It just blows the lighter out, we've tried.

My electric oven currently trips every time I try and use the grill. The electrician tells me it’s the heating element and I need to get an appliance repairman out.

Do you have an oven which is a combination of gas and electric? I’m trying to understand why your gas oven has a plug and is connected to the electrics.

If it’a a gas oven then you don’t need it plugged in, the plug will only be be for the piezo unit to create a spark for lighting the gas. Unplug it, light the gas and it won’t trip the power.
Try making a long taper to light then put that at the back of the oven to light it.

It's completely gas, so I assume no heating element. It's not a fan oven but it does have a "safety switch off" I assume that is what is blowing the lighter out when we try to light it that way. That could be electric.

The "spark" thingie is electric and the clock/timer. I don't think it's the spark thingie as we can use that to light it but after being on for a minute or so it throws the electrics.

Do you think we could plug it in to light it and then turn it off?

It’s worth a try

What is the make and model?

Frequency · 27/12/2020 18:21

I've accidentally cleaned the model number off the front of it. I go a bit overboard with the Mr Muscle sometimes. It's Hotpoint and it's about 6 years old.

Have you opened the plug to check the wiring? Is it a moulded one you can’t get into?

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 27/12/2020 18:23

Light it then unplug it/power it off at the switch, to work around the problem for a bit until you work it out.

It cost around £450 new when we got it if that makes a difference. The sticker on the inside is all burned so I can't see the model number.

It's a molded plug. I have no spare 13amp fuses but I am going to buy one to try before I call out a repair man but I'm thinking if it was the fuse it would trip the electric as soon as you turned it on.

Take a fuse out of a lamp or something to try

Diva66 · 27/12/2020 19:26

I’m guessing it incorporates an electric grill. It’s a shame you don’t know the model, unless of course you have the instructions manual that came with it? There are some good trouble shooting guides on YouTube.

It's definately a gas grill. The grill is a combo grill/second oven. If you turn the gas knob one way it's a grill turn it the other way and it's a small oven. As an oven it's shit. Even though it allegedly goes to gas mark 9 like the main oven it never actually cooks anything. We really only use it to keep things warm and haven't turned it on in months.

The electric is for the spark to light it and digital clock.
