Would you eat Creme Fraiche dated 23 Dec?

Ill pre-face this by saying that I'm ridiculous about use by and best before dates!

Anyway I want to make a creamy mushroom pasta and the bloody creme fraiche is dated 23 December. It smells absolutely fine on opening though

So would you chance it?

I would, and have done in the past. Just make sure its fully heated.

Knucklehead101 · 27/12/2020 16:58

No! But I am extra weird about this sort of stuff

DelurkingAJ · 27/12/2020 16:58

Yes. Without a further thought, particularly as you’ll be heating it!

CityDweller · 27/12/2020 16:59

Yes. I eat opened creme fraiche way past its use by date and I’m still alive. It keeps for ages in my experience

LuciaLemon · 27/12/2020 17:02

I mean, it's soured cream basically isn't it? I just don't have anything else in that will go in a creamy mushroom sauce! So annoyed I thought there was longer on it.

I'm veering towards giving it a go which is unusual for me!

If it smells fine and has no visible mould then it is absolutely OK to use. There is a huge "margin of error" on Best Before/Use By dates so it is fine to go over

GreenGordon · 27/12/2020 17:05

Er, yeah. It’s basically off when you buy it, isn’t it?

LuciaLemon · 27/12/2020 17:06

Smells as it normally would and it's looks the same. It's been kept on a very cold fridge too

OP posts:
MispyM · 27/12/2020 17:07

Absolutely.

purplecorkheart · 27/12/2020 17:07

Yes especially as it is going to be heated

Cookerhood · 27/12/2020 17:10

I wouldn't think twice about it, it will be fine.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 27/12/2020 17:13

I finished a half litre pot of cream yesterday. It had been open for about 3 weeks, and the use by date was 9 December! Smelled and tasted absolutely fine. So yes, I'd definitely use it.

emptyplinth · 27/12/2020 17:14

Yes

Neolara · 27/12/2020 17:15

Yes. Creme fraiche (and cream) always seems to be ok for ages after its use by date.

LuciaLemon · 27/12/2020 17:20

You're a braver woman than me @FleetwoodRaincoat

OP posts:
DeRigueurMortis · 27/12/2020 17:20

Yes.

It's one of the reasons why I buy it over cream - it lasts much longer and typically far longer than its BBD.

It's easy to tell when it's turned. It smells awful and there's no mistaking that it's gone off even if it hasn't developed obvious mould.

If it smells ok then it is ok.

BBD's are really just guidelines and there's a lot of variation on how people store/use the item so they err massively on the side of caution.

I actually get somewhat cross about BBD's in the sense they contribute to a huge amount of unnecessary food waste.

movingonup20 · 27/12/2020 17:24

Sniff test, you are cooking it anyway

Twigletgirl27 · 27/12/2020 17:40

I've just discovered recently that you can freeze creme fraiche. I use it in a smoked haddock risotto recipe and only use half the tub. Google told me it was fine to freeze and it is!

StanfordPines · 27/12/2020 17:42

Very much so. Sniff and a taste first to be on the safe side.

ZippedyDooDa · 27/12/2020 17:43

I'm eating some dated 25 Dec. Fingers crossed! Have done before and lived

LazyFace · 27/12/2020 17:49

They tend to last about a month longer than dated. I have scraped mouldy hits off soured cream before. Everybody lived.

Shelby30 · 27/12/2020 17:53

Maybe not with cream and so far past the use by date. I ate some black pudding recently was only out of date day before and it was next morning. I had a dodgy tummy and totally regretted it 🙈 not worth the risk.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/12/2020 18:03

Im funny about dates if use by which I assume creme fraiche would be, but then I won't eat anything a day over due to a bad bout of food poisoning once.
I am just deciding wether to eat pork cooked xmas day today or throw Away as I am never sure of things , some stuff seems to arrive short dated now I feel

BarbaraofSeville · 27/12/2020 18:52

But it will look and taste bad before it's actually a food poisoning risk and cream usually doesn't go off for weeks after the date, so the date is fairly meaningless.

I find that higher-fat dairy foods keep much better than their low-fat equivalents in general.
