Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

BathroomWork · 29/12/2020 23:37

Tried to add to watch list, but it's not working so placemarking!

Does anyone know where I can find silicone lids of the same size? I store leftovers in soup bowls and need reducing my cling film consumption.

Randomrebel · 30/12/2020 07:57

Thanks they look fab but I wonder if they will fit more in than pictured as I have quite a lot in two draws currently? Knife, fork, spoons in 3/4’s of one draw (old fashioned draw divider) then odds and sods of smaller things like potato peeler, corkscrews, tin openers, scissors, bottle opener, wine stops etc down the side. Bigger utensils like spatulas, whisk heads, rolling pin, potato masher, sieve, umpteen wooden spoons in another draw thats also rammed.

@lifeinlimbo2020 see above 😊

Anyone know where i can get a measuring jug that has embossed measurements on rather than printed on? I have about 5 pyrex jugs that the print has washed off of. I found a metal one on amazon but its £21! I'm not spending that on a bloody jug

My cheap plastic ones have raised numbers.
Came in a pack of 3 from a supermarket.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 30/12/2020 08:16

Haven't RTFT so someone might have suggested them, but a pack of Sharpie pens. Useful for labelling school uniform and (top tip) marking your double duvet so you know which way round to put it in the duvet cover - ours is only just rectangular but patterned with squares so unless you count the bloody squares you can't work out how goes in the cover. So I took a Sharpie and wrote all over it.

Anyone tried a silicone toilet brush and can recommend?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/12/2020 08:32

Thanks, Coco.

Anyone tried a silicone toilet brush and can recommend?

Yes! They’re great! I pop it in the dishwasher every now and then for a good wash!
Good as new!

😂🤣😂

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 30/12/2020 08:38

That was a joke btw!

UncleBunclesHouse · 30/12/2020 08:47

Stainless steel magnetic clips for fridge are my contribution

YY to PPs on stick on hooks, Joseph Joseph knife and sink caddy, fizzy wine vacuum stopper, Really Useful Box, USB lighters, fridge whiteboard organiser, USB sockets, power bank, X long cables for iPad...I am very bad at spending way too much on such things but it makes me feel more organised = feel better about life in general!

UncleBunclesHouse · 30/12/2020 08:48

@lotusbell Joseph Joseph (predictably) do a very good one

SimonJT · 30/12/2020 08:50

@lotusbell

Anyone tried a silicone toilet brush and can recommend?
I bought one, my cleaner saw it, used it and swiftly called it an abomination. She was however right, it doesn’t assist in removing limescale as it cannot scrub effectively.
Randomrebel · 30/12/2020 08:54

@BearandaSpare these are my current scruffy draws still got the dishwasher to empty embarrassment. Do you think your draw things would work or do I have to do some serious decluttering? Thanks

@Randomrebel hmm they’d organise it all better but they’re not so good for big/bulky items like ladles etc. I took most of mine out and put them in a jar on the worktop then used the organisers for all the crap that doesn’t go anywhere else - ironically things like bag clips which everyone is recommending buying 😂

lotusbell · 30/12/2020 09:13

Hmmm conflicting reports, as expected! I can imagine the silicone 'bristles' wouldn't be firm.enough to really scrub clean actually. Will do some more research!

Cat0115 · 30/12/2020 09:17

@Dollywilde just spent £140! All essential. Feeling optimistic for the first time in ages, thanks for the thread!

Timbucktime · 30/12/2020 09:35
@Purplethrow Pyrex! I love our Pyrex roasting tins and baking trays, they are so much more durable than non stick ones whilst also not being sticky
I’m the same, love my Pyrex and no more bits of flaked off non stick on my food.
Now I just need something similar as a frying pan.

Peridot1 · 30/12/2020 10:01

I ordered a Pyrex glass try yesterday afternoon for 9.99 and then spotted them on Ocado for 6.99. So if anyone uses Ocado they are currently on offer there. I ordered a second one.

ChessIsASport · 30/12/2020 10:12

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I have found the Argos storage boxes quite good. I haven’t tried this one but it looks a little similar to the John Lewis one.

B127 · 30/12/2020 10:27

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, we have these

They do various sizes and colours.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/12/2020 10:33

Thanks, both. The Argos one is perfect but not available to order for delivery, or in any of our local stores. Grrrrr.
