Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

My best thing this year was a smaller laundry basket (lots of research trying to avoid Amazon and failed). Fits under the washing machine door (old one didn't) holds plenty, and old one used to pile DDs clean washing in for her to deal with.

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

Maybe I should cut my losses and go to Ikea

God, no, don't do that. You'll come back with photo frames that don't fit the pictures you own, three packets of postcards, a half dead plant, five lanterns, two fleece blankets and another six pairs of (crap) scissors.

@WantChewbaccaForGood

You definitely need one of those drinking fountains for cats.

If you don't have a cat then you need one of them, too.

I love this, You have made my evening 🐈

@Purplethrow
Masterclass enamel range, the specked ones are amazing. They come in great sizes. I have 4 small (a bit bigger than A5) that are ridiculously useful, 2 larger trays, 1 baking sheet, 1 large roasting tin and 1 square.
They’re not non stick just great quality. I’ve already had them years, worthwhile investments that owe me nothing.

If it hasn't been mentioned already, just want to remind everyone to stock up in stamps. First class is going up by 9p sometime soon!!

Love, love, love my rubber glove drying stand. No more yucky wet cold gloves for me ]]
Clothes peg together the little finger each hand and hang over mixer tap. No need for extra cluttery.

Rubber brush is more hygienic than regular, also amazing at drawing hair off carpet/rug, so if you have pets it’s a double bonus

Greenmandm · 29/12/2020 01:48

Forget about the kitchen clips. Get one of these rechargeable sealer. Really handy.

Another cool thing if you use big bottles of water (5 litres and over). Makes your life much easier.

@DownyEmerald I can't remember where I got my laundry basket, I think it was from B&Q or Homebase. It's definitely important to get one which fits under the washing machine door!

AtlasPine · 29/12/2020 06:51

This thread is an utter homage to consumerism. So easy to be drawn in to thinking we need all this stuff. (Me included, I’m not being superior).

If you have bought one of those USB electric lighters for your candles, can someone please explain to me how I need to charge it? I am visually impaired, and I really have no idea… I just ordered one yesterday, and it will be my first time ever lighting my own candles and using such a thing… I’m not sure I have a plug with the USB port… I have the cable for my iPad, but that’s about it… Do you buy a separate plug that actually has a USB?

SimonJT · 29/12/2020 07:19

I have a question, people who have those silicon bowl covers etc.

When you wash them how do you stop every speck of dust in the air sticking to them? I have some Ikea ones, they were great on first use, but the moment they are ‘out’ every tiny speck in the air seems to gravitate towards them.

Fridge storage boxes, clear boxes to be able to store everything in your fridge without having to play fridge jenga. You can get more in your fridge by using them to keep alike foods together.

laughoutquiet · 29/12/2020 07:47
@MutteringDarkly See I knew I needed one... Any suggestions for which one?

Thank you.
I just bought one from B&M for £3 Smile

I have a separate 3 pin mains plug with a USB port to recharge my electronic spark stick lighter, torches & flashing dog collars. I use the lighter for my oven too.
Redcrayons · 29/12/2020 08:00

@Hellokittymania on mine there is a USB port on the side. I can’t remember if it came with a cable or not, I’ve got teens so we’ve got more cables than amazon.

You probably won’t need a new plug if it’s the one that came with the iPad. The slot the cable goes into is the USB
You will need a different cable to the one from your iPad though. Does it tell you in the listing what type is USB CONNECTION IT Is?

middleager · 29/12/2020 08:15

Re the USB candle lighters, do you have a straight or curved version? I can see both available...

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 29/12/2020 08:18

@Floralnomad

One of those stair baskets to collect all the crap in before it gets taken upstairs .
Primark have these in at the moment for a tenner (I think)
rainbowstardrops · 29/12/2020 08:20

I only came on MN while an advert was playing out on my iPad but I now appear to have just spent £51 on two wrapping paper holders and a usb candle. Oops Blush

Redcrayons · 29/12/2020 08:24

Mine is a straight one, curved ones look good though. Don’t think I saw them when I bought mine.

middleager · 29/12/2020 08:25

Thanks Red decisions, decisions!

singsingbluesilver · 29/12/2020 08:30

Lakeland laundry basket on legs that fold up underneath it on springs - bloody brilliant for taking washing out to the line and saves you having to bend over.

Tweezers with a light in them.

Boot tray and boot buddy to keep the mud out of the house.

I use my stair basket for keeping outdoor things I don't need every day; gloves, scarves, hats, foldng umbrella. They're near the front door, so handy when I want them.
