Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

Well, who knew I needed a rubber broom? 2020 continues to surprise, right to the bitter end.

Place marking

Elastic bands - for sealing packs
Masking tape - fab for labelling boxes in the freezer
Tealights - can never have enough

Eh, this thread is AMAZING

Got this brilliant little extension plug thing from Amazon. It sits on my bedside table so i can charge my phone/fitbit/kindle without having to dislocate my shoulder to reach the plug socket

I find those USB rechargeable lighters handy as you never know and always need one for candles too.

Those IKEA silicon covers or there’s the beeswax ones too for when you can’t be bothered putting into a container with lid.

Leontine · 28/12/2020 17:38

I used bag ties instead of clips.

@nosquirrels
"Baskets to organise cupboards"
I have new cat litter trays for storing things in cupboards. They do them in all sizes. Light weight and nothing falls out.....
I keep salad items in one in the fridge. It fits exactly on the shelf. Nothing gets lost at the back .

Rockbird · 28/12/2020 17:49

This is a great thread and I have a huge Amazon shopping basket now. One of the things I want is a set of utensils because what I have now is a mismatch of God knows what collected over the 20 years I've been married. Why does it feel like a betrayal to get rid of them? I feel properly guilty at the prospect Blush

But ... but ... please reassure me that you don't charge your phone/fitbit overnight while asleep, do you?

[health and safety officer risk assessment coming on]

Borridge · 28/12/2020 18:05

What happens if you do, ArabellaScott ?

Borridge · 28/12/2020 18:09

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good looking transparent container I can put my cheese into?
I would like something I can put in the fridge and on the table.

poshme · 28/12/2020 18:12

Adding my must-have before reading thread:
Multicharger that sits in kitchen - looks like a toast rack and can charge 6 things at once. Never have to search for a charger again

godmum56 · 28/12/2020 18:12

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

Maybe I should cut my losses and go to Ikea

God, no, don't do that. You'll come back with photo frames that don't fit the pictures you own, three packets of postcards, a half dead plant, five lanterns, two fleece blankets and another six pairs of (crap) scissors.

but also meatballs and cinnamon buns.....

@ArabellaScott oh you’d get on well with dh. Every night I get asked if everything’s switched off downstairs. 15 years that’s been going on.

When the cat was alive I’d say everything’s switched on & I've given the cat a box of matches to play with.

I get "is everything switched off and have you checked all the doors and windows?" From my DH. He is obsessed with switching everything off in case something catches fire (I understand the risk with chargers/ washing machine etc but not appliances which go into standby mode!)

Love, love, love my rubber glove drying stand. No more yucky wet cold gloves for me www.amazon.co.uk/Glove-drying-Poppit-Plastic-Bottles/dp/B01A6VRXNY?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

OMG I have been looking for one of these for ages since Lakeland discontinued theirs - my family can't help but drop the gloves I use into water and I hate it!!

Rapunzel88 · 28/12/2020 18:28

Also this IKEA pegboard for necklaces and other jewellery. All my necklaces used to be in such a tangle. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/skadis-pegboard-white-10321618/

Rapunzel88 · 28/12/2020 18:29

This makes me enormously happy www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/skubb-storage-case-for-wrapping-paper-dark-grey-30402430/

@TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet

We have a 40 pack of wooden pegs instead of kitchen clips.
I too have used wooden clothes pegs for many years to reseal bags of foods🙂
Rapunzel88 · 28/12/2020 18:38

Glad to be of service Smile!

Same here.

We're really trying to avoid purchasing plastic.
