Dd turns 6 in a couple of weeks and we'd like to get her some new books for us to read to her at bedtime so nothing scary

She's got lots of picture books but feel she's ready for chapter stories to read each night

She always enjoyed the Julia Donaldson ones, Paddington bear, tiger who came for tea and a set of princess fairy tales

Happy to buy individual books or a set

We did read my naughty little sister recently and she loves those!

I’m reading the Harry Potter books to 6 yo DS. He adores them and after we finish a book we then watch the film. I’d never read the books or seen the films before so I’ll enjoying it too.
He has started re-reading the first one in the series himself after I finish reading to him and before he turns the light off.

Also Roald Dahl. (Although don’t let her read The Witches by herself, ds did and came running downstairs terrified. Most of the others are fine though.)

My father's dragon.

Enid Blyton the far away tree series.

Roald dahl - good place to start: George's Marvelous medicine or Fantastic mr fox.

Holly Webb books if she likes animals.

Rabbit and bear

My naughty little sister.

Daisy and the Trouble With... series by Kes Gray

Jeremy Strong books eg My Brother’s Famous Bottom (can get a set)

Dick King Smith set, eg The Hodgeheg

My DD is 6 and we’ve read some Ronald Dahl such as George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Twits and Fantastic Mr Fox.
Not ready for Harry Potter yet.

Yes to the many Holly Webb books. Also, my 6 year old consumed all the worst witch books earlier this year.
The Naughtiest Unicorn
Isadora Moon
Daisy Meadows, Friendship Forest books
The Magic Faraway Tree series

The Secret Diary of a Naughty Cat

My dc1 is just turned 6. We have read The Twits and George's Marvellous Medicine recently. We are halfway through The Christmasaurus. Enjoyed all of them. Roald Dahl is a bit grim really, but dc didn't seem to mind.

The Princess in Black series is a good start for that age. Chapters are short and easy to read. DD is 6.5 and reads them by herself now.

She hates Roald Dahl with a passion. but likes the wishing chair series by enid blyton. We have just finished the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and we are reading harry potter together. She also likes the Jolley Rogers series of reading books - theres picture books too so its a good stepping stone into reading.

-Claude the dog series.
-The Firework Maker’s Daughter.

  • The Famous Five (rather repetitive if you get the whole set but DS loved them).

Look for chapter books with lots of illustrations..
off the top of my head I can think of the following series... Hubble Bubble, Isadora Moon, Claude, Adventures of Mr Penguin, Jolley Rodgers, Shifty McGrifty and Slippery Sam, Princess Mirror belle)

Other short chapter books... Rainbow Fairies, My Little Pony, Ballet series by Darcy Bussell, Jasmine Green(that's the name of the main character), Zoe's Rescue Zoo, Bear Grylls Adventures, Dave Pigeon.

Mine hated Roald Dahl. Personally I find a lot of them a bit OTT.
Enid Blyton... Mine enjoy them now they can read themselves, but boring when younger.

I've just read The Highland Falcon Thief with my 7yo. She's also just getting into Harry Potter. They are quite tiring to read out loud.

Following with interest- my 6yo ds has had some great books for Christmas that he can read himself (Squishy Mcfluff is a big hit) but they are too short and he can read them in one sitting. He's not an advanced reader or anything it's just that the longer ones tend not to have as many illustrations and so aren't as engaging for him, he likes the pics as much as the story.

He has loved Captain Underpants, Dog Man amd Ook & Gluk all by Dav Pilkey though.

PashleyB · 27/12/2020 16:23

The owl who was afraid of the dark is lovely. And also Isadora Moon and Claude

JingleJohnsJulie · 27/12/2020 16:25

My DD loved those Claude the Dog books to read by herself. If you are after a book to read to her the first Mr Gum book is good Xmas Wink
