A bit freaked about the snake

Moved to Oz in 2007, severely arachnophobic, did the usual shake shoes, check car visors, never go outside barefoot thing for years but gradually got over it so now I'm pretty blasé. On Christmas Eve DS, wife and baby came over, DS nearly stands on a baby brown snake in the driveway. DH beheaded it with a spade, drama over. BUT, I realised after that if I had seen it I wouldn't have known what it was. Obviously you are not going to go near any snake but the fact that it is one of the world's deadliest snakes and was slithering round my garden has freaked me out a bit.

"Man is the cruellest animal" right enough.

sassafras123 · 27/12/2020 14:48

Pretty sick to chop it's head off just coz it was there. Don't you know it is you humans who are invading the snake's territory? Seriously why live in Oz if you don't want to be alongside the wildlife?
Live and let live. There will be plenty more waiting to invade your property.

NuniaBeeswax · 27/12/2020 14:51

This thread didn't go as you expected did it op?

whoamongstus · 27/12/2020 14:54

Hahahaha

"I saw a protected animal in its habitat so we killed it cos I don't like them and don't think they should be here despite moving to a country where they live"

"YABU"

"I AM GETTING THIS THREAD REMOVED YOU ARE NUTTERS"

ColumboOnTheCase · 27/12/2020 15:05

God MN really is full of nutters.

I believe the phrase used is ‘nest of vipers’

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 27/12/2020 15:08

Maybe you should not be living there op...

TheQueef · 27/12/2020 15:13

Oh bravo Columbo Grin

QuestionableMouse · 27/12/2020 15:18

Beheading is a horrible death for a snake because it can take up to 30 minutes for the brain to die.

I lived in the States for a couple of years as a teen and the farm where I lived had all sorts of wildlife including rattlesnakes. Never killed one, you just avoid them.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 27/12/2020 15:21

Not bleeding hearts. It was cruel and unnecessary.

And as for

God MN really is full of nutters

Then you’ll feel right at home dear.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 27/12/2020 15:23

Giraffesnek 😍

BashfulClam · 27/12/2020 15:27

I’m terrified of them, no bother I just tend to live in places that don’t have high incidents of snakes. My Australian mate told me some chase you though...fuck that!

WizardOfAus · 27/12/2020 15:37

Your Australian mate is having you on.

He said most stay away but a few territorial ones will come at you! That is the stuff of nightmares to me!
14ScottsRoad · 27/12/2020 15:53

if you disturb them accidentally (or not) then run they might go for the attack.

But most go as far and as fast from humans as they possibly can. For good reason.

14ScottsRoad · 27/12/2020 15:57

I recall stumbling across a red bellied black once when bushwalking. It raced away looking over it's shoulder (Or whatever snakes have as their shoulders) with pretty unmistakeable fear.

Honestly- if you come across a snake the best thing to do is stand stock still and let it pass.

14ScottsRoad · 27/12/2020 16:00

Oh another snake story (I am feeling a bit nostalgic!).

My dad was sitting outside once reading House and Garden and having coffee. His feet were up on a footstool. He said that out of the corner of his eye he saw their dog (an airedale, so a big dog) just freeze. He then saw slither underneath his chair a snake. he said that he and the dog just sat there very very still until the snake had passed.

Then they went inside and dad had a brandy.

Bobkitten · 27/12/2020 16:02

Poor baby snake. Killed in a dreadful way that would have taken it ages to die, and all for being in the wrong place because some ignorant people think snakes are evil and ‘fair game.’

Your DS thankfully didn’t step on the snake, so why could your husband not have gently moved it away into the undergrowth, or called a snake catcher?

They are beautiful and fascinating little life forms - what a waste.

Thisusernameistakenagain · 27/12/2020 16:02

Really wish I hadnt have read this.
What a despicable, cruel and unnecessary act :(

Soutiner · 27/12/2020 16:06

Op needs to chill out and watch a movie.

WizardOfAus · 27/12/2020 16:08

Sure, it may strike if it’s feeling cornered and stressed. But it’s hardly got it’s Nikes on “chasing” you down the road.

No exactly. and as I said up thread. Humans are the most dangerous and deadly beings on the planet.

We can be pretty shit really to other living things.

DuzzyFuck · 27/12/2020 16:17

'We're going to emigrate to Oz so we can enjoy the weather and lifestyle but we hate the local wildlife so we'll just kill whatever dares to happen onto our property'

Why exactly did you move to Oz if you're terribly frightened of the spiders and snakes OP? Either the lifestyle makes it worthwhile and you make your peace with the wildlife, or you move somewhere with less venomous creatures?

I'm not sure how you expected to find any sympathy here.

As an aside, Giraffesnek has made my day, and fully agree that baby boas are just the cutest little beings 😍

jillypill · 27/12/2020 16:18

This is why I couldn't live in Oz, or even visit. Spiders, snake, sharks, crocodiles, stonefish, it's bloody endless!

jillypill · 27/12/2020 16:22

Killed in a dreadful way that would have taken it ages to die

Off topic but i thought beheading was a quick death?

Willow2017 · 27/12/2020 16:28

You have lived for 13yrs in a place with all manner of native animals/reptiles/insects etc which are dangerous to some degree or another yet you still don't have a clue about how to deal with them nor the laws of your adopted country?
That says a lot about you and its not flattering.

Killing a baby snake by beheading it is vile.

The only reason you want the thread taken down is because it didnt go the way you wanted it. Do you act like a diva in RL too?
