Where there any shops open near you on Christmas Day?

I'm just curious. I live in London, and I'm used to being able to pop out for essentials at any time. Last year we ran out of butter on Xmas day, and my mum was enthralled by the the fact that there was a shop open on the next road along to buy some from. On the converse of this, I remember driving to my MIL's one Sunday with a plan to make a Mexican dish. I'd forgotten to buy limes, but though "ah it'll be fine, I can get some from a corner shop". But nope, no corner shops for miles!

What is normal for you? I just could not imagine having no shops around to buy at least sims stuff to cobble together a dinner!

Yes, apparently the Nisa was open and the M&S food because it is a petrol station. Both are within 5 mins of our house and stock essentials but not limes. This is in the suburb of a major city.

North London, one 'corner shop' and a small supermarket were open. I popped my head in the door of the corner shop and wished the man working there (I believe the owner) a Happy Christmas.

Home counties market town - I don't really know, I assume they are all shut and have never tried. There are no corner shops on our side of town just a petrol station, that was open because when I filled up on Christmas Eve I heard the person in front of me asking. No limes though. There is a Nisa on an estate on the far side of town, that might have been open.

Didn't really take much notice as working but I know that the 24 hour shop across the road would have been open, but all I needed was water and other stuff to drink whilst at work and i had got that on Christmas Eve. If Covid had not struck, then I know a few cafe's and Restaurants would have been open, the little 'add-on' shop to one of the closed cafes was open (for coffee and juices.

That's what I like about London - although I mainly never bother to shop Christmas day, it is nice to know someone is open on that day, I guses but I am usually from the "if you haven't already bought it, don't bother now, only one day' school of thought.

TravellingSpoon · 27/12/2020 08:20

I'm in Leicester and several corner shops were open here at varying times of the day.

Figmentofimagination · 27/12/2020 08:22

I'm in Blackpool. There were 2 Spar's open near me. 1 a 10 min walk and 1 a 20 min walk in the other direction. Only know this as they had big signs made advertising they were open for a few hours on Christmas Day.
Didn't actually go out that day so don't know if the local shop 5 mins away was open.

Springersrock · 27/12/2020 08:23

Our little corner shop (small town on rural south coast) was open 10 - 6 on Christmas day

A few Indian/Chinese takeaways were also open

There’s also a petrol station that opens for the morning - looking at our local community FB groups and the incessant “are there any petrol stations open” posts, they would have made a killing

BerryPieandCustard · 27/12/2020 08:50

I’m in Essex, in my town it is only some of the little independently owned corner shops that may be open, I know one over the other side of town always is and we drove to the woods for a walk and drove past another open corner shop.

A bun fight started on the Facebook page for my estate after someone asked if the Co Op round the corner was open,
Which at least provided some afternoon entertainment

EssexGurl · 27/12/2020 09:29

Tier 4. Village has Tesco Express and Co-Op. neither open Christmas Day - usually one is, typically Tesco. But Costa was - and relatively busy (just take away of course).

CatrinVennastin · 27/12/2020 09:34

Tier 4 here and in north london. Our area is predominantly Turkish so Xmas isn’t celebrated so most shops that are allowed to open in tier 4 were open.

Lots of limes and coriander @pusscatsinblankets

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 27/12/2020 09:35

I didn’t do an exhaustive survey, but shops that I know were open within a five minute walk of my house were two petrol stations, one selling M&S food and the other Waitrose, plus a corner shop. I’m pretty sure one of them would have sold limes.

Spidey66 · 27/12/2020 09:36

Another Londoner here. Several shops open within walking distance. I think it's fairly common in diverse areas. In my area there is a high population of Turkish and Kurdish people running convenience stores and I assume many are Muslim so don't celebrate Christmas.

Spidey66 · 27/12/2020 09:37

Oh and limes and coriander are easily available.

MadameBlobby · 27/12/2020 09:40

Yes there are a couple of grocers/small shops near here run by Asian people that were open as normal. We didn’t go to them but they leaflet/post on fb etc.

OddestSock · 27/12/2020 09:50

Our corner shop was open. It's new and the owners are lovely, so we popped in to get a couple of things to support them. Apparantly they had been busy. I live in a small town in the north west.

DelphineWalsh · 27/12/2020 09:54

Loads of Asian and Eastern European grocery stores near me were open. A couple of take aways and the barbers too.

Chimeraforce · 27/12/2020 09:57

Just the BP with an M&S food inside(small) or tesco local.

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2020 10:34

@CeeceeBloomingdale

There are no corner shops for miles, supermarkets were closed. I wouldn't go to a shop on Christmas day even if it were open.
You would if you had numpty relatives who buy your kids presents that require batteries, but never include them!

My ex FIL bought my DS1 a huge fire engine one year that required 4 C size batteries and 6 AAs. Never crossed his mind to buy the bloody things.

Mintjulia · 27/12/2020 10:57

Our nearest shop is Tesco 4 miles away.
Recently open 6 - midnight, it closed on Christmas Day.

The only places open for miles, were a petrol station (maybe a pint of milk, definitely no limes Grin) and the emergency chemist.
