Can I quit sugar when I have a house ful of sweet treats?

I am addicted to sugar, I'm also pre diabetic. 2021 is going to be the year when I knock this in the head as otherwise I'm going to end up with type 2 diabetes. However there is a ridiculous amount of sweet stuff in this house, that isnt going to change.
Has anyone successfully given up sweet treats and how have they done it?

I stopped buying the enormous selection of crap that I used to have. Once I start eating I just want more.

I now buy only enough biscuits to have one with an after dinner cup of tea. The dark nights haven't helped, but I lost a stone over the summer without changing my actual meals, just snacks.

CompleteCobblers · 26/12/2020 22:44

Should have said- good luck OP!

cheeseisthebest · 26/12/2020 22:46

Thank you. It's not me who buys it! Not only does my husband buy it (and lets kids have too much, in my view!) We've been bought so much for Christmas. You are right about once you start you cant stop. Everything's so crap atm it's very hard to resist nice food!

We've got so much from friends and family that we've filled 2 carrier bags and will pop in the food donation trolley at Asda

All unopened with long dates, weve kept some but there's just too much for a family to get through

cheeseisthebest · 26/12/2020 22:52

Ours has all been opened unfortunately. I would happily give to food bank but my husband has opened pretty much everything for the kids "cos its Christmas!"

I don't have any of that stuff in the house at all, no sweets, no biscuits no chocolate. If it was there I'd eat it everyday so I never buy it.
If you are serious you must clear the house.
I used to be diabetic, heading towards insulin, but my blood sugar is now normal, actually it's low my HBA1c is 40 mmols.
I beat diabetes by losing 5 stone and losing sugar.

TartanLassie · 26/12/2020 22:54

Nope sorry OP but no way. :(

madcatladyforever · 26/12/2020 22:55

Also nobody in the house should be eating this shit, certainly not the kids, if you are pre diabetic they could also be genetically prone and need to be weaned off it.
When I was a kid I was allowed one curly wurly a week as a treat and I had to walk a mile to buy it along with my comic from the paper shop.
It rots everyones teeth so I don't understand why its in the house at all.

Honeyroar · 26/12/2020 22:55

I’ve done it a couple of times- the first time very successfully for several months. I just cut out processed sugar and processed foods. I still ate carbs and fruit. I also stopped all diet and low fat products. I lost two stones and two dress sizes without any calorie counting or fuss. I used grapes in Greek yoghurt as a treat, which really stopped me craving. Look up JERF - just eat real food. There are helpful Facebook pages etc. I’ll be back on it myself in a week or two.

Chimeraforce · 26/12/2020 22:58

Realistically, No.

cheeseisthebest · 26/12/2020 23:12

Theres no point saying it shouldnt be in the house and my kids shouldnt eat it. I know both those things but theres nothing I can do about that.
Just could really do with some ideas from anyone who has successfully quit this stuff!!

Why you NEED to have them in the house OP? Sorry don't understand that bit.

I buy "treats" for DD's pack lunch, crisps and a sweet. She keeps them in her bedroom.

But other than that we have no biscuits or chocolates or sweets in the house at all. Well none I know about.

I bought 6 selection boxes before Xmas and demolished them in 2 days! I can not have sweets in the house. :(

cheeseisthebest · 27/12/2020 09:11

I dont need to have them. I never buy them. If I lived on my own i wouldnt buy them at all!!

If they're there and you can't remove them, then its on you.

You need to start thinking of sugar differently. Can I recommend this book? (hope the link works from the app)...

Todayisgood2 · 27/12/2020 09:16

Maybe get dc on the same page as you and edu are them about sugar and diabetes? I'm terrible with sugar and I'm literally going to bin some of our rubbish as too much and will power late at night is rubbish! Good luck you can do it!

britnay · 27/12/2020 10:36

You need to work on reducing sugar for everyone. Kids really don't need it. You'll all feel better for reducing it. Once you give up carbs your weight will drop off and your energy levels will increase. Your cravings will stop and your appetite will reduce. Just get everyone on board :)

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 27/12/2020 10:46

Genuinely, yes I have. And for me it's just will power. I've lost almost two stone so far.

There's cupboards full in our house, I need to lose another stone and a half to be a healthy BMI. If I don't lose the weight then I'm at even greater risk of having a poorly baby and I can't do that again.

So the mars bar just isn't worth it, the price is too high to pay for the chocolate orange Grin

If you're prediabetic could you apply that sort of thinking to it?

cheeseisthebest · 30/12/2020 21:08

I'm really trying. It's so hard!
