Left handers!

If you're a left handed adult do you have any left handed specific products?

Myself and my DH are left handed, 36 and 40 respectively and don't own anything left handed specific at all. I vaguely remember using a left handed fountain pen in primary school but that's it.
It has never even crossed my mind until now that my life may be made slightly easier if I did.

I've been looking online and it seems you can get a left handed version of anything and everything.
Obviously we get by just fine but are we missing out and just accepting our right handed world when things could be easier?

I'm definitely getting some scissors as this was all prompted by wrapping presents and again tearing the paper every single time but what else is good?

@SimonJT

I have a left handed Peeler Scissors Tin opener Corkscrew Mechanic egg timer Rulers Bamboo kitchen utensil set Silicone spatulas Computer keyboard Left handed mouse

Some lefties can fairly reliably use their right hand, I really can’t, I certainlt couldn’t brush my teeth, chop etc with my right hand. Anything that requires a grip just doesn’t work in my right hand, yet I play piano and when I play my right hand is as reliable as my left.

I’m also left footed, this is a big advantage in rugby as my body isn’t facing the way an opponent is used to.

Please can you explain the left-handed corkscrew. I use a normal one with my left hand, I don't understand what the difference is. Do you find it easier to turn your hands in different directions?

Is a left-handed one where you turn it counter-clockwise? I don't get why that's an advantage to us!

@DappledThings

I turn things anti clockwise, right handed/‘normal’ corkscrews are for people who turn clock wise.

I'm another one who only writes with my left and everything else with my right.

Interesting. It has never occurred to me that clockwise/anti had anything to do with handedness. What about screwdrivers where you have to go both ways to tighten or loosen? Do you find loosening is therefore easier? I've never noticed a difference.

I don’t know, I’ve never really noticed, I tend to use an electric screw driver for ease/laziness.

DappledThings · 28/12/2020 13:33

Fair enough! It does make sense I suppose that you are turning into the way the wrist naturally bends. It's just never occurred to me to consider a corkscrew as anything other than ambidextrous. Unlike a vegetable peeler for instance where I do have to use one on the ones with a horizontal blade rather than vertical or I'd get nowhere.

I'm a leftie. The only thing I'd really like is a set of left-handed kitchen knives!
What would be different about left-handed knives? Confused
SimonJT · 28/12/2020 13:45

@Nunoftheother The grip/handle is shaped for a left hand, so blades also have a side, so the sharp side is the opposite way round.

Ah posted too soon.

Breadknives are a good example, the ‘teeth’ are only on the right handside of the blade, on a left handed knife they’re on the left.

I've always chopped andsliced using an ordinary knife, including bread knives in my left hand and never noticed a problem. Both my parents do the same.

Quite fancy trying one of these left-handed knives now to see if it feels different.
