What are the best budget meals? We eat a lot of pasta which is obviously cheap, but would like some more ideas! Thanks

Pasta with new potatoes and green beans. Optional pine nuts and Parmesan.

Cheap and filling.

VVKills27 · 26/12/2020 19:13

Dhal & rice. Adding a bit of garlic/fried onions to the rice makes it especially delicious.

Also simple curries made with chickpeas & onions.

Toad in the hole or sausage & mash.

Traybakes filled with roasted vegetables & potatoes, can add any canned beans for protein.

Jacket potatoes with a variety of fillings for people to choose from.

All mega easy to make, very cheap, nutritious & delicious.

Thanks! I have never made dhal, so that would be a new one!

I make wrap ‘pizzas’, just a tortilla, whack some cheap tomato purée on and whatever topping you fancy on top. Great for using up leftovers in fridge. Pretty much anything works. Hot oven for 8 min or so.

Eating veggie is often cheaper, or a least reduce the amount of meat in dishes. Things like a predominately veg based pasta bake with a small amount of chorizo.
Also think about minimising waste. I’ve realised today that the joint of gammon I bought for Christmas is actually amazing value. Will easily do us 4 main meals plus sandwiches and salads. I’m definitely going to buy one more often!
Anyway popular dishes here
Thai tuna fishcakes
Chickpea curry
Veggie chilli make loads and just switch the side.
Stuffed field mushrooms with Stilton and hazelnuts
Veggie cottage pie (lentil and root veg base) mix of white and sweet potato top.
Sausage casserole
Mushroom risotto
Tuna pasta bake
Shakshuka
Carrot and kidney bean burgers

Thanks @SmidgenofaPigeon I always find my tortilla pizzas for really hard at the edges- any tips?

White tortillas are much better for the job than the brown. Tomato purée right up to the very very edge, and preferably cook on a pizza tray.

Cheesypea · 26/12/2020 19:54

I make alot of soup to use up any veg that's going Curley. If you add lentils or beans it's some low cost protein.

midsomermurderess · 26/12/2020 20:05

Black-eyed beans and mushrooms. I use the Madhur Jaffrey recipe.

Nacreous · 26/12/2020 20:14

Homemade pizza of normal sorts are pretty cheap TBF - just flour and yeast and water and a 500g load of flour will do 3 or 4 pizzas. Then some mozzarella (the cheap stuff is fine just drain it a decent while in advance) and slightly water down tomato paste and anything else you want.

Gammon, as mentioned above, does actually work out pretty cheap when you work out how many it feeds. Painful when you buy it though!

TOWGA · 26/12/2020 20:30

@Nacreous Thanks will give pizzas a go as I have a toddler who will love to decorate them

OP posts:
Houseplantmad · 26/12/2020 21:26

My DS makes what he calls eazzas- pitta bread with tomato purée, a bit of ham and a sprinkling of cheese. He eats about four in one sitting but they'd be ideal size for a toddler individually.

Turkey is relatively cheap and is good for making a curry or frying in breadcrumbs.

Cauliflower cheese with bacon sprinkled on top.

JingleJohnsJulie · 26/12/2020 21:35

Cheese & Potato Pie.

We love Potato & Cauliflower curry as well Smile

GlitterBiscuits · 26/12/2020 21:38

Omelettes; Jacket Potatoes; Cauliflower and Broccoli cheese; Toad in the Hole

AdaColeman · 26/12/2020 21:46

Risotto is an economical meal, a good way of using up small amounts of leftovers such as chicken & mushroom, or ham peas & broad beans.

Pasta Primavera is great for using up any green vegetables, broccoli florets, spinach, green beans etc.

Homemade soup is filling & economical, an easy lunch, or a main meal when followed by omelette.

TOWGA · 27/12/2020 08:44

Thanks for all your suggestions

Falafel are cheap and filling, I usually do them with pitta and salad and make some hummus so only really needs a couple of tins of chick peas Smile

BikeRunSki · 27/12/2020 08:57

I don't eat meat, bit DH and the dc do. For mince based meals - spaghetti Bol, cottage pie, lasagna etc - I mix the meat 50/50 with a tin of green lentils. Makes it gp twice as far for about 40p, and adds fibre.
