Presuming you celebrate xmas that is.

This thread is inspired by wondering what people are eating in other countries today.

@PicsInRed

In NZ or I would be but for this fucking virus we do things like roast turkey, ham (hot or cold), roast vegetables, sprouts, beans, peas etc, all the usual British fare, with lots of cold salads and meats and seafood as well. We also have the full hot Christmas pudding, custard (hot or cold) along with trifle, ice cream, fruit salads, mince pies, and something called brandy snaps which I can't find here. Sob. 😢

There's lots of NZ wine, beer, some French champagne and soft drinks (all cold!) through the day - which is warm, so either windows and doors are open and/or food eaten outdoors, or all is closed up for the aircon to do its job!

Some also have a BBQ and visit the beach.

Also can't forget Pavlova ... which was invented by us Kiwis, and certainly not by Australia flat whites too. 😂

I can't tell you how much I miss brandy snaps, Pics. I'm getting to a point where I might even attempt to make my own, especially since our Christmas trip this year was cancelled.

Our traditional NZ Christmas dinner was pretty much exactly as you described, though we might also have done a roast lamb too. Mum said this year she did a Colonial Goose for everyone.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/12/2020 19:58

[quote PatriciaHolm]@PicsInRed Do you mean these?

Yes, those. I am going to buy some to see if they pass muster. Thanks Patricia!

BertieBotts · 25/12/2020 20:07

We are in Germany, there is no "typical" German Christmas dinner from what I can gather from my students. But we go English style. We struggled to get most of our ingredients this year and also I couldn't really be arsed. So we had:

Roast chicken
Roast potatoes
Steamed carrots
Brussells Sprouts
Bratwurst wrapped in crap bacon
Gravy

We can't get stuffing mix here and we don't make yorkshire puddings as our oven is a bit crap. Usually we have parsnips, but this year I couldn't find any anywhere!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 25/12/2020 20:11

wtf us stuffing mix? Stuffing is just breadcrumbs, butter, salt, pepper, herbs - maybe onion, depending on what kind of stuffing you like...

EKGEMS · 25/12/2020 20:14

Citrus glazed ham with cheesy hash browns and cranberry sauce peas and rolls

yourfaceisaforeignfood · 25/12/2020 20:18

New Zealand
Glazed Ham served cold
roasted leg of lamb
A creamy chicken dish
Stuffing
new potatoes and fresh peas with masses of mint
salad
gravy
cranberry sauce
pavlova
chocolate log
lemon tart
whipped cream
Fresh strawberries and raspberries.

Omg yes that's them! Why are these not in supermarkets? Or any I looked in anyway 😂

Inthetropics · 25/12/2020 20:30

Arroz à grega (a special rice that we make for Xmas), Tomato quiche, Cod fish, Ham with pineapple, potato salad, lefy salad, panetonne filled with ice cream and ganache, cold wet coconut cake. I am vegetarian and DP is not. We are both brazilian.

Inthetropics · 25/12/2020 20:33

And MIL did some roasted pork and farofa (very hard to explain so it'll be easier if you google it!).

@PicsInRed They used to be, that's how I know them - I'm a Brit and remember them from years ago! Waitrose appear to do Brandy snap baskets, but they aren't the same thing as the rolls ;-)

@PicsInRed brandy snaps were definitely a thing here 20 years ago. Maybe they’ve gone out of fashion. My Mum bought them every Christmas.

I can't tell you how much I miss brandy snaps,Pics

Oh me too. I'm going to use PatriciaHolm's very useful (thank you!) link next year to get some in!

SeaToSki · 25/12/2020 20:40

East Coast US here

I go full on British Delia Smith style. My friends cook a huge range of different dishes, some do traditional family foods from their various heritages, some use it as an opportunity to cook something new and exciting. Thanksgiving has more defined cooking traditions than Christmas around here

PicsInRed · 25/12/2020 20:41

Thatwentbadly

Defo time for a comeback 😉

QuentinInQuarantino · 25/12/2020 20:48

Full on turkey dinner but it was very difficult to source! The pigs in blanket and parsnips were ve expensive imports! (Spain)

StartupRepair · 25/12/2020 20:57

Australia. We had prawns followed by turkey, ham, roast potatoes, and beautiful salads. Then Christmas pudding with strawberries, raspberries and cream and icecream. Perfect 26 degrees and we sat outside all day.

RickJames · 25/12/2020 22:51

Germany.

Roast chicken
Dauphinois potatoes
Cauliflower cheese
Roast sweet potatoes
Salad/ pickled beetroot/ noodle salad

Most of it made in advance - not really going with any nation's food.. just decent food that we like.

We are Dutch/ English so no significant attachment to Germany or anywhere.

TheHoneyFactory · 26/12/2020 00:27

Australia
Cheese platter to start with blood orange gin cocktails
cold meats platter (glazed ham, turkey, chicken, proscuttio etc)
prawns & crayfish
salads (pasta, potato, green, rice, couple of other fancy type salads)

fruit platter, fancy icecreams & homemade truffles/turkish delight for afters

its was warm - 30c so was all eaten between being in and out of the swimming pool. nice and relaxed and had turkey toasties for dinner.
very grateful to have had a "normal" xmas and hang with at least one side of our family!

GlowingOrb · 26/12/2020 00:31

Beef tenderloin with blue cheese sauce, twice-baked potatoes, peas (normally we do asparagus but i couldn’t get decent asparagus this year).

GlowingOrb · 26/12/2020 00:44

Oops, beef tenderloin is central us

GenericUsername101 · 26/12/2020 00:50

Starter - lemon and paprika marinated prawns, caramelised onion and feta crostini
Mains - Honey glazed ham, roast turkey, baked whole flounder, roast potato and kumara, stuffing balls, bean and feta salad, roasted summer veg salad, various condiments.
Dessert - pavlova and Christmas pud followed by a cheeseboard

You can probably guess where I am from the menu!
