Turkey still frozen!

Has anybody ever cooked a turkey part frozen? 2kg Turkey has been in the fridge since 5pm on Wednesday so plenty of time to defrost (instructions say 20 hours to defrost). Read in Internet about allowing extra time to cook but I am not sure that's safe? First time doing a Christmas Dinner, had a rubbish year, we were supposed to go to PIL today but DS has to isolate.

Try soaking in cold water to speed it up. Nice dinner back if needed.

Do you have a meat/cooking thermometer you can use to check the temp when cooking?

That's a long time for a 2kg turkey (that's basically just a chicken isn't it?) not to have defrosted, is your fridge very cold?

Sorry, that's not helpful I know - I agree with pushing dinner back a bit and letting it defrost out of the fridge for a couple of hours or so, I think that's better than risking the shits, which truly would be a crappy end to 2020. Good luck x

Unfortunately I don't have a thermometer.

I think my fridge must be very cold, I might just ask MIL for some turkey and send DH up for it.

It might be a little drier but should be fine if you cook it longer - wrap it in foil and baste regularly to keep it from drying out. Stick a skewer into it and make sure the juices from the middle 'run clear'. It should not be bloody or pink. However turkey does sometimes have some pink tinged meat in areas. Ideally you would have a meat thermometer but I certainly don't! I'd go for risk of dryness and cook it longer.

Soak in water. Have dinner tonight instead of at lunch time .

Out of fridge now into sink and replace the water a few times to speed up defrosting.

This. You can use ever so slightly tepid water.
SoupDragon · 25/12/2020 10:56

Defrost it in the microwave?

Ifailed · 25/12/2020 10:57

leave it out to fully defrost and eat it tomorrow. Surely must have other food in the house?

FindHungrySamurai · 25/12/2020 10:58

Remember if you defrost it in tepid water in sink to clean the sink and surrounds really really thoroughly when you’ve finished.
