Cooker! Gas or electric?

HeidiHoNeighbour · 24/12/2020 14:00

I have a gas cooker that is dying.

Now although I do love the controllability of a gas hob, should I change to electric?

Can’t do separate oven and hob unfortunately.

Has to be a free standing cooker.

Which would you choose?

Gas hob and electric oven

dementedpixie · 24/12/2020 15:32

You get dual fuel cookers so you can combine features

Xerochrysum · 24/12/2020 15:35

Have you used electric hob before? I hate them. I had one in the flat before we bought the house, and have them at holiday cottage we stay every year.
Never get them for my house.

I’ve got electric oven and gas job.

Used an electric hob for a week in a holiday let and it put me off for life.

I really miss my old gas hob/electric oven range cooker from the old house, ours now is crappy electric hob and I hate it. If I had the money though I'd buy one with an induction hob as they are a different kettle of fish altogether!

ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 15:41

Get an induction hob.
You will never miss gas.

More expensive to buy
but much cheaper to run
and will last long after gas is banned in homes

Yoffel · 24/12/2020 15:43

Induction hob and electric oven. Second choice would be gas hob and electric oven. Never electric hob, never gas oven (not by choice anyway)

HeronLanyon · 24/12/2020 15:43

Gas all the way every time
Second choice gas hob electric oven.
Third choice - live on toast and pot noodles. Loathe electric jobs even the super duper newer ones which are meant to be more responsive etc.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/12/2020 15:43

Induction hob. Game changer.

PaolaNeri · 24/12/2020 15:47

Second an induction hob if you change to electric, otherwise stay with gas. I have had all types and my induction is the cleanest and easiest to use.

ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 15:56

More options here

Induction is MUCH safer than gas
Induction hobs are a doddle to clean
and they are cheaper to run than any other type of hob

alltheadrenalin · 24/12/2020 15:57

Why's everyone anti electric?

SantaMonicaPier · 24/12/2020 15:57

After a lot of research I'm moving from gas to induction although don't know if you can get it on a freestanding model

ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 15:59

@alltheadrenalin

Why's everyone anti electric?
If you are used to gas, conventional electric is AWFUL just utterly horrible slow, unresponsive, dangerous

hence why induction is the only real option

HeidiHoNeighbour · 24/12/2020 16:22

Thanks everyone!
Looks like I’ll be looking at induction/electric then.

Does it have to be professionally installed?

Heidi
Looking at the AO details, they take away your old cooker and connect the new one at the time
sorted

PickleSarnie · 24/12/2020 17:10

Induction hobs are amazing. Forget everything that you think about electric.

They have the controllability and responsiveness of gas but the ease of cleaning of electric. You can wipe down straight away, no fiddly bits to clean and you don't need to panic that you haven't turned it off because it does it itself once the pan is taken off.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/12/2020 17:19

Personally I think gas is better for Yorkshire pudding.

murbblurb · 24/12/2020 17:29

gas is ultra controllable and really isn't that hard to clean. Either induction or gas, conventional electric is really really hard to control and hence super messy.

no induction if anyone has or is likely to have a pacemaker. you may need special pans - others will advise.

LPG here as no mains gas and it is FABULOUS - a year of twice daily cooking for £35.

And making moist sponge cakes. I also like to be able to cook foods that require different temperatures at the same time.
