I'm planning on trying a green bean casserole tomorrow. Having double checked the recipe it says French fried onions. I hadn't realised that this is a specific brand/ style of onion. Can I use just fried onions or do they need to be crispy packet ones? All the recipes I find use bought ones, but hopefully normal onions are sometimes used? Thank you

American here - they need to be crispy packet ones. Sorry.

Maybe you can make these? If you don't have buttermilk you can substitute regular milk with a squeeze of lemon in it.www.delish.com/uk/cooking/recipes/a31465549/fried-onions-recipe/

Noooooo!

But thanks for the quick reply.

So, if I flour and fry onions until crispy will that do or is there something special about the bought ones?

Hard to buy those in the UK but you can make your own version: www.servedfromscratch.com/copycat-frenchs-fried-onions-from-scratch/

I think yes that would do but slice them very thinly. You also might want to add them towards the end of cooking your casserole to prevent them getting soggy (the bought ones are very dry so they stay crispy).

I think we may have added another dish to our family Christmas dinner! It was a great success! I was worried that the beans would be too soft as some of the recipes online said they had to be soft/mushy enough to break up on stirring, which I didn't fancy at all. As it was I used soft fried onions in the campbells soup with barely cooked beans and the fried onions from the link in a pp on the top, heated through in the oven for 30 mins. I thought it was OK but DD and DH absolutely loved it. I may use it as a cauli cheese substitute on occasion through the year too.

Thank you all for the advice.
