Good Morning Happy Xmas to all, Please can I ask? my hubby and I are looking at buying our first home Yes 1st time buyers at our age :) and we have viewed a lot of houses in the last 3 months, however one question he keeps asking me is how old is the property, (it is so he can assess if the electric needs updating, its a long story which I wont bore you with) I have found a house I love and have booked us in to view it on 2nd Jan an I am hoping he will feel the same when he sees it, I know he will ask the question I would like to have the answer ready for him, can anyone advise please??

How does the estate agent describe it? What does it look like and what are the features?

heathergem · 24/12/2020 08:32

Land Registry will have that info, it's a few pounds to check online.

But the age of the property is presumably irrelevant if previous owners have done whatever electrical updating he is thinking of?

I mean, we just bought a house built in 1860, which needs rewiring, but ten years ago, the next door neighbours bought essentially the same house, but fully retired by the previous owners.

It just says Well Presented 3 bed Semi Ready for launch, I have done the virtual tour and there doesn't seem to be a lot of sockets in some of the rooms, and the one that is used as an office has extension cables all over

Do you have a link?

Surely the electrics won't be the original electrics! We sold our 1875 built house but the previous owner had rewired in about 2005 so the electrics were fine with newer fuseboxes etc.. not the old school ones. The people that bought our house quite rightly had a look at the fusebox in the cellar when they bought it and asked me questions about the electrics as well.

The age of the house is irrelevant, you just need to ask about the age of the wiring when you view and if necessary arrange for an electrician to visit and assess as part of the survey process.

Part of my house was built in 1380 and the rest between 1570 and 1700. It has been repeatedly rewired since.
