Not been paid by new employer and no pay slip received

Started seasonal work a few weeks ago, on a zero hours contract.

Pay day would normally be on or around the 28th of each month, but brought forward this month to 24th.

I have not received a payslip either online or in the post, have just checked my bank account and my wages are not there and there are no payments pending.

What should I do if still nothing there in the morning? Being Christmas Eve there probably won't be anyone in HR or Payroll until next Tuesday 29th...

Really disappointed as have worked so hard, outside on my feet for hours in freezing cold, wind and rain, and was really looking forward to being paid Sad

Have you had to work a month in hand? So won't get paid for December until normal payroll run in January ?

eaglejulesk · 24/12/2020 06:32

Monthly is very much the norm in the UK. I've never heard of a company here paying fortnightly, though weekly is common in some sectors.

Oh my goodness - I couldn't cope Shock

SwaylorTift · 24/12/2020 06:35

Hope your payment comes in today OP. For the payslip ours turned out to be electronic but on a portal and not emailed. Took me a while to work that one out

If the payroll is done by faster payment then it won’t show up as a pending transaction. And will just appear in your account once it is sent (usually within a couple of hours).

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 24/12/2020 06:40

Sod we received our payslips - before they were electronic - the day we got paid. So you may be worrying for nothing

ShalomToYouJackie · 24/12/2020 06:40

Could be that you missed payroll cut off this month and will get 2 lots of pay next month. This has happened to me when starting new jobs before.

Parkandride · 24/12/2020 06:49

I'd be worried you missed payroll cut off as you started in December, you need to check though. Today is a working day so there should be finance/HR cover. Fingers crossed for you

You could and millions do. I think monthly pay is the norm in Europe - I may be wrong though. Fortnightly is usual in the US.

I suppose I would - but thankfully it's not likely that I will ever have to!

Monthly is much easier to manage when most bills are monthly too.

Weekly is quite hard because you need to save up for larger purchases whereas with monthly, you can time them with when you get paid.

DP currently gets paid fortnightly, but that's quite unusual, I get paid monthly.

OP, is it a small or large company you work for?

If it's a small company, they might do their pay run manually today, so your pay might turn up later.

If it's a big company with a BACS pay run, if it hasn't turned up by 9 am, ask your boss if it should have and if not, why.

If it hasn't, they should at least be able to arrange an interim payment today.

No payslip is less of an issue, they might be available online somewhere or stuck in the Christmas post, which has been appalling this year. However, it should be available to you somewhere of course.

ShalomToYouJackie · 24/12/2020 10:58

Have you sorted it?

billy1966 · 24/12/2020 11:12

Don't be passive about this.
You have worked.
You were told you would be paid on the 24th.
Get onto your boss to confirm that the payment has been made.
Most people would cry blue murder if they were not paid on time.
Get on early to your boss and make it HIS problem. Politely but firmly.
You have emails saying the 24th.
You expect to be paid today.

wowfudge · 24/12/2020 13:27

That's good news - the payslip may well be stuck in the backlog of post there is at the moment.

Monthly is quite a good idea once you get over the first month! It means you can plan for all the big payments like rent/ mortgage/ insurance/ council tax/utilities etc etc to go out just after payday which means you know what you have left for the month.

2183 that’s great news! have a happy Christmas,

billy1966 · 24/12/2020 13:53

Delighted you have been paid👍

I find fortnightly works just as well - bill payments are due at different times of the month, so I pay some from the first pay of the month, and the rest from the next pay, and rent is paid fortnightly. I simply can't imagine starting a new job at the beginning of a month and having to wait until the end of the month to be paid - that's insane!

PleasantVille · 24/12/2020 19:49

Is this your first job? You wouldnt normally expect your salary to appear in your account at one minute past midnight on payday, that's not how it normally works.

Good that you've got it but in future be more realistic in your expectations to avoid stressing your self out.

Cheesecake53 · 24/12/2020 19:52

I am so happy for you!!

AdoraBell · 24/12/2020 20:56

Well that's how it works in most jobs in the UK, and sometimes it's even worse in that the cut off for any changes is really early in the month, so if you start after the 5th or whenever, you don't get paid until the end of the following month unless your manager makes a special request, eg if you can't wait that long to be paid.

@PleasantVille no, this is something like my tenth job in my working history, and the reason I was worried is because I'd been long term unemployed and living off dwindling savings, so it was very important to me to receive my first income in ages, on time. Thanks for your patronising comment though.

Wow Shock Shock I think I'll stay here! I'm working at temp roles at the moment and I get paid weekly, but otherwise I've always been paid fortnightly. I guess you get used to whichever way it is though. What about benefits - when are they paid? It's weekly here, other than superannuation, which is fortnightly.
