Staying up flood creeping

snowspider · 23/12/2020 22:37

It's pouring out of the ground around in new springs and in our attached garage which is a few inches below the cottage floor. The hill above is full and now the water is pouring out in the village, really hoping it will stop raining though the forecast says not yet. It has just gone into the dining room corner. Pembrokeshire limestone and clay, worst it has been here.

I am so sorry.

Have you lifted/stacked stuff up, bagged up paperwork and put upstairs?

MadameButterface · 23/12/2020 22:44

I saw the flood warnings and really felt for the people it would affect. It must be the icing on the cake of a bag of wank year. I’m really sorry op.

snowspider · 23/12/2020 22:56

Thank you. Apparently its not been in the house for 50 years. Sadly we have loads of stuff, renovating the cottage and everything is in piles...loads of books, art work and not a lot of room upstairs where the floors are needing strengthening too. Fingers crossed it won't come up the next inches. It's coming up from ground so not like we can make a dam with anything.

I’m so sorry op. Fingers crossed the rain stops soon and the flood water doesn’t get any higher.

DianaT1969 · 23/12/2020 23:03

Gosh, so sorry OP. My fingers are crossed that the rain will stop.

snowspider · 23/12/2020 23:06

Moving things now. Presents from under but not the massive tree!

MadameButterface · 23/12/2020 23:07

Ah jesus op, that’s horrible. Have you got candles etc for if the power goes? Hot water bottles in your bed for if the boiler goes off? Fill the bath in case the water goes (so ironic) then you can flush the loo with a bucket. Pans of water on the gas hob if you have one. Fingers crossed for you that it stops soon and not much damage done.

RandomMess · 23/12/2020 23:08
Sad
BrieAndChilli · 23/12/2020 23:09

Concentrate on the irreplaceable and sentimental stuff, you can replace furniture and clothes and books etc but photos, paperwork, letters, kids drawings etc can’t be.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 23/12/2020 23:10

Oh I'm sorry for you. Hoping the rain stops soon!

BashfulClam · 23/12/2020 23:18

Oh god I hope it stops.

BringPizza · 23/12/2020 23:52

Snowspider that's awful. PP listed you need to think about a clean water supply and heat. Get the kettle on before the leccy goes, turn the bath on, and move stuff while it's running. I hope it doesn't come in too much more.

Chanandlerbong01 · 23/12/2020 23:52

How is it now? Is there anything you can block the gaps with to slow it down?

BringPizza · 23/12/2020 23:53

Alternatively, are you able to drive to a safer location so you don't end up stuck upstairs if it gets bad?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/12/2020 23:57

Fingers crossed for you!

PerkingFaintly · 24/12/2020 00:06

Ah I'm so sorry to read this.

Charge phones now.
Be ready to put electricity off at consumer unit.
Prep clean water (bottles, upstairs bath full).
Thermos of tea? And mugs.
Light source – candles, torches (test batteries are working!)
Presents & precious stuff you're already on.

Hope it doesn't get too deep and has gone by morning.
Sending you all the best.

PerkingFaintly · 24/12/2020 00:10

Also make sure you have the phone number of the insurance company (check which it is!) and ideally the policy number.

Lindy2 · 24/12/2020 00:17

If you can't get stuff upstairs start stacking things up in the downstairs rooms. The lower down items might get wet but the stuff on top might stay safe.

You also need to turn off your electricity if the water really does start rising.

I hope it doesn't turn out to be too bad OP.

snowspider · 24/12/2020 00:35

It's not raining which is good. I'm hoping it will stay out of the house. We've moved presents and easily moveable things. It's a strange thing here because it is overflowing limestone stores up the hill, aquefours?
so kind of backdated or won't dry up when the rain does. I am thinking of people in the Welsh valleys who are just moving back into their homes from last winter, much worse off than us. Water is so depressing in the wrong place and tragic.

You can use tinned food to stand furniture and boxes on to raise them a bit higher from water. A friend of mine did this when they flooded

thosetalesofunexpected · 24/12/2020 00:52

Hi Op
Really sorry that you are going through this kind of Shit !

Totally Agree with @BrieAndChilli
Comments
Your Comments are very sound
Very Good idea.

Just forcused mainly on keeping sentimental stuff such as your family photos etc real safe from elements, safe somewhere such as in your Attic or anywhere else most suitable for this purpose.

And rember your Non-Sentimental stuff items like furniture and other
Stuff can be replaced.

Have you got house insurance? or is it too difficult to get house insurance cause of where you live?

Fill up the kettle

Try and find a way to protect elec sockets too, with those plastic socket covers.

Can you use thick towells to block any gaps,if you dont have draught excluders.?

Best of Luck
Make sure your mobiles are fully charged up..
Best of luck

theThreeofWeevils · 24/12/2020 00:55

No useful suggestions that haven't been made already, just good wishes for you, OP.

Awful for you. I'm so sorry for everyone dealing with this.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/12/2020 01:10

Have you got any plastic toy boxes or similar upstairs that you could empty out and put your paperwork etc in, the boxes will be waterproof even if the stuff has to stay downstairs. If you have lids for the boxes you could try and seal closed with gaffa tape if you have it.

Chanandlerbong01 · 24/12/2020 08:03

Hopefully it all settled and was a false alarm! Thinking of you x
