I've had a laparoscopy today and since the surgery I have terrible painful trapped wind going all up through to my shoulders. I am now at home and have had a cup of peppermint tea and have been doing the cycling position and also rocking on all fours but no relief. I am very bloated and extremely comfortable, please help me if you can

Rennie Deflatine if anyone can get to a supermarket or pharmacy for you.

lurklemurkle · 23/12/2020 22:01

When I've suffered with this after surgery peppermint tea did very little, but peppermint oil capsules were excellent. Recommend trying to get the capsules.

A hot bath sometimes works if you can't get Deflatine, if you can take one.

Yes! Colpermin are fantastic.

Lie face down on the floor and roll side to side

Spottysausagedogs · 23/12/2020 22:06

Hi sorry i don't want to freak you out but please get urgent help this can be a sign of a perforated bowel. Call someone even if its just 111 for medical advice, sharp pain up through shoulders a classic sign. Hope you're okay Flowers

I found plain hot water more effective than peppermint tea. Also face down on the floor with your knees tucked under you as far as you can. Doing that, then every so often thrusting your arse in the air and waving it about. Dignified it is not, but it’s what I’ve found to work.

Sometimes I also try gently massaging my stomach - apparently anti-clockwise is the direction to go. And lying on left side and pulling your right knee up to your chest. I may or may not be demonstrating some of these myself this evening Blush

Spottysausagedogs · 23/12/2020 22:07

Is it getting worse? Had the discharge nurse been informed of the pain?

Glutted · 23/12/2020 22:08

Can you get any Andrews? That's what always helps me
Failing failing that drinking lemon water as hot as you can drink often helps me or walking around.

I hope you feel better soon OP

It's not trapped wind though because it's not in your digestive system. It's the gas (CO2?) they use to inflate your stomach cavity so they can see to operate. It will ease and peppermint oil capsules will help to soothe your digestive system, mine was irritated by both my laparoscopies but I think it's more a case of the gas being absorbed into the bloodstream gradually than trapped wind you can expel

buckeejit · 23/12/2020 22:16

Mint tea. It's awful. Good luck

halfpasteleven · 23/12/2020 22:19

Buscopan helps if you can get some .
Hope you feel better soon .

Ohdear2020 · 23/12/2020 22:22

Have you tried being on all fours, sticking your bum in the air? That’s the only thing that works for me

danni0509 · 23/12/2020 22:25

I’ve had laparoscopies, the shoulder pain is horrific.

It doesn’t last too long but awful whilst it’s there, I had the peppermint tea and did the rocking on all fours and wincing when walking about. I got hot showers too.

Is it 48-72 hours approx until it resolves I think I remember?

Hope you feel better soon x

scotsllb · 23/12/2020 22:49

Definitely a hot shower if you can't manage a bath, soak your abdomen and shoulders to prevent pain from hunching over for as long as you can.

Aldilogue · 23/12/2020 23:54

This is very common after laparoscopic surgery as gas travels up and remains in your shoulder.
It can be very painful and disturbing.
The best thing is to go for a walk, the movement and momentum will disperse the gas. Keep moving as lying still will keep the gas trapped and waking can take your mind off it.

Serendipity09 · 24/12/2020 02:25

OP there is nothing you can really do, the pain is caused by the carbon dioxide they inflate your abdomen with but it's not trapped gas... the carbon dioxide irritates the phrenic nerve (to do with the diaphragm) which refers pain to the shoulder. It should be gone in a day or two, your body just needs to absorb the remaining carbon dioxide.
