Should I be worried?

Sorry it’s a Covid related school one!

I’m in Scotland where we’ve been told our school will be closed to all but key worker and vulnerable children. All other learning will take place online. I received an email telling me my children are expected back in school when they reopen on January 6th.

I’m not a key worker, I’m a student learning from home and until now I didn’t think my children were classed as vulnerable either, no one has ever expressed any concerns about them, their home lives or their welfare before. Younger DC (10) has some additional educational needs and gets support for this in school, as well as going through the process of ASD diagnosis (though doesn’t yet have a formal diagnosis). Older DC (11) has no additional needs, educational or otherwise. Would have thought if they’d wanted DC2 back in school because of their additional needs, DC1 wouldn’t be required to attend.

I do have OCD, and pretty much general anxiety, so I’m now really blooming scared that I’m somehow failing as a parent and the school think my children are being abused or neglected or that their home life is particularly bad. I am a single parent and my children do receive free school meals as I’ve only my student loan as income, I’m unsure if this is to do with it either?

Sorry probably a bit of a non issue but between being scared that my children are being sent back to school early when it’s deemed the schools aren’t safe to be open, and my children being classed as vulnerable my mind is working over time! Surely if anyone had any concerns about my children though, they’d speak to me about it?

I'd imagine it might be because of the free school meals, rather than anything else. If they were concerned someone would have spoken to you.

It will be the free school meals. Your kids are in the pupil premium category so will be eligible for extra support

Got no idea how big a relief that is to hear! I was imagining social work turning up at my door because of concerns at school etc, wasn’t entirely sure if the school would discuss any concerns with me before something like that was to happen or not
