An orange in your stocking!!

Will this soon be as exciting for our children as it was for our grandparents in 1945?

My mum was 12, and recalls the re-arrival of citrus fruit to the post-war UK!

Like a bit of nostalgia at Christmas.... 😂

My 9 year old told me she doesn't want one. I told her it's tradition and just put it back in the fruit bowl if you don't want to eat it!

PerhapsOverlyWorried · 22/12/2020 18:08

We always got tangerines or clementines in our stockings as kids (and loved it!) though not because of the war - not quite that old, carried it on to my own DC Grin

CoronaIsWatching · 22/12/2020 18:09

Only if it's a chocolate one. Seems a bit mean to put an actual orange in stocking, it won't be nostalgia to them

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/12/2020 18:10

No UK but I remember the time when oranges and mandarines were available only in winter and a rare treat.

WorraLiberty · 22/12/2020 18:11

I hated that as a child

It made walking down the street so difficult.

TheChosenTwo · 22/12/2020 18:11

Mine always get one, dh and I always had one in our stockings growing up!
One year Father Christmas must have been in a hurry and these were overlooked, dd1 was dismayed, turned her stocking inside out looking for one!!
They all like oranges though and they usually get eaten alongside them opening the rest of their stockings or else get put in the fruit bowl.

Ihatesandwiches · 22/12/2020 18:14

Always put an orange, a banana, an apple and a chocolate orange in DD's stocking. She laughs every year and reminds me Grandma got a rare banana in hers on prescription! The orange goes back in the fruit bowl, the apple and banana are eaten as part of breakfast and the chocolate orange is put away safely to eat later.

JazzyGeoff · 22/12/2020 18:16

I'm mid forties and we used to get an apple and an orange stuffed in our stockings.

And none of these fancy 'show' stockings either- no, just your common old off white knee school sock Grin

Trying to wrestle fruit out of the toes of a small school, sock used to occupy us for a good half hour on Xmas morning. My mum was a clever woman.

AnnaMagnani · 22/12/2020 18:17

My DM used to put an orange in my stocking every year - again she told me that it had been the most exciting thing in hers as a European child after the war.

Didn't like to tell her I'd been putting it back in the fruit bowl for years.

zigaziga · 22/12/2020 18:18

My DS would love it Grin
I remember when he was about 2.5 him getting a big packet of sweets and things (which I wasn’t too thrilled about) and also in there was a tangerine. The first thing he went for in absolute delight was the tangerine!

winechateauxjoy · 22/12/2020 18:22

Oh it just would not be Christmas without a 10p in the to and then a satsuma, a tube of smarties, a bag of chocolate coins and then maybe 4 or 5 actual gifts. I always had that as a child and my dc had the same - even now they are all grown up. I can't wait for my own future gc to have the same!!

mrsfeatherbottom · 22/12/2020 18:36

We always got one as kids. And uses my dad's hiking socks as stockings!

TheChosenTwo · 22/12/2020 18:42

We do put chocolate coins in too but I don’t know why I bother, the chocolate is always horrible and none one ever eats the coins, I end up taking them to work in January and leaving them on the staffroom table!

captainprincess · 22/12/2020 18:44

I think the OP may be referring to brexit, re will this soon be as exciting as it was for our parents/grandparents Grin

BlueBottle18 · 22/12/2020 18:50

I still get an orange from my parents! Its just tradition, I find theorange quite exciting. It signifies the end of the stocking. You get an orange and a pack of chocolate coins at the bottom of the stocking every year, so I still get an orange and some chocolate (tends to be fancy chocolate these days Grin)

We don’t do stockings here but if we did, my dc would be ConfusedConfused at an orange

AuntieStella · 22/12/2020 18:54

I used to get a tangerine and a bag of chocolate coins

DC get the chocolate coins, and also a chocolate orange

Christmashottubintheshed · 22/12/2020 18:56

My mum used to do it to us. Along with nuts in the toes which neither me nor my brother liked. What a waste of time! Grin

LuciaLemon · 22/12/2020 19:00

I can't think of anything more boring tbh.

BertieBotts · 22/12/2020 19:02

You've got to put an orange in!

AuntieStella · 22/12/2020 19:02

@LuciaLemon

I can't think of anything more boring tbh.
Then you deserve a stocking filled with coal Xmas Grin
GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 22/12/2020 19:04

I've always had a clementine at the bottom of my stocking. Never thought it 'mean' or 'boring' as I could see the effort my mum had gone to in filling my stocking with loads of lovely little toys and gifts. I'm 36 now and she still makes me a stocking every year and sure enough I can feel it in there now, same as always. 😅

ShowOfHands · 22/12/2020 19:05

It's not boring or mean fgs!

My dc love it. DS (8) wrote in his letter to Santa last year that he didn't want a satsuma in his stocking. He wanted TWO. He eats his while opening the rest of the stocking. He always looks for it first.

LostInTheColonies · 22/12/2020 19:09

We always found a satsuma, nuts, a small box of raisins and a toothbrush in ours 😁
DD gets the same, and is distinctly unappreciative 🤣
