Anyone else go in ridiculously early for Christmas and now has a dead tree in their living room?..

Hi,

Just that really.

Always get a real tree, but not until around the 10th, but this year given the sheer crapness of everything, we decided to get it on the 1st and begin the festivities early. Plus once the tree is up, it's much more socially acceptable to drink every day !! 🍾🥂🍸🍷🍺 👍 Just being festive guys!
just blocking out the constant stream of shit

Anyway, this was a mistake.

It was a beautiful tree on week one and two, but now it just looks like something from a Tim Burton movie. Dark, droopy and, well.. dead....because it is.

We usually keep our tree up until New Years Day, but at this rate we're not going to have any tree left! Just a withered old trunk, surrounded by needles and lights.

Given I hear a lot of people went in early this year, I'm assuming I'm not alone?...

I bought one with roots, so it’s still looking pretty good. But I don’t think you’ll be alone.

boatyardblues · 22/12/2020 14:02

Fake trees for the win! We could have ours up all year round if we wanted, plus you can bend the branches to show off and space your baubles to their best setting. A fake tree is social death in our naice street and I’m sure the neighbours judge, but we don’t care.

Getting there 🤣

We did the same last year and bought early - tree was ditched outside Boxing Day morning as had enough by that point as all the needles fell off. Went fake this year for the first time ever 🤣

LittleSwede · 22/12/2020 14:12

Bought ours on the 29th of Novemberfrom Aldi, usually wait until a week or so before Christmas. It's still looking good, a few needles on the floor but not bad. The water is starting to smell a little bit though...

isseys4xmastinselcats · 22/12/2020 14:14

no after one year buying a real tree a front room full of insects and finding pine needles in the carpet for months afterward have had a fake tree ever since same one comes out of its box each year and more enviromentally friendly than chopping down a living tree that ends up down the tip after christmas

trevthecat · 22/12/2020 14:15

Same here! Needles everywhere

Herdwick · 22/12/2020 14:17

Sounds like you haven't been giving it enough water!

lazylinguist · 22/12/2020 14:18

Nope, bought mine on the 13th. I don't do early Christmas, pandemic or no pandemic! Have you been watering it, OP? Mine is super thirsty this year, so I'm hoping that the fact it's still taking on so much water will keep it perky for longer!

Bettina500 · 22/12/2020 14:21

I didn't buy early for this reason, but as others have said have you been watering it? They need watering daily.

Never had one that drops needles except the odd one or two which is to be expected, but I buy from the same garden centre each year and they are the type that doesn't drop needles. I think there is a different variety that does.

Urghhhhhh · 22/12/2020 14:25

It doesn't seem to be drinking much at all! We deliberately got a stand with a well, to allow more water to be sucked up, but it's hardly drank anything past the first few days.

It's not near a radiator either. It's actually against French windows, so should be staying nice and cool, from top to bottom.

rollinggreenhills · 22/12/2020 14:49

Did you cut the base of the trunk off before you put it in water?

They can't drink if they've been cut for a few days as the bottom dries up.

Witchend · 22/12/2020 14:53

🤣🤣🤣

Remove needles and spray it silver.
It will be all the fashion soon.

frogswimming · 22/12/2020 14:53

Mines the same, droopy, brown, crunchy and nit drinking water. I'm gonna pretend it's a rustic colour scheme.

lazylinguist · 22/12/2020 14:55

I don't think we have always cut the bottom off, but we did this year. Apparently the sap forms a seal on the cut edge within hours of the tree being felled, and it can't take in water after that unless you cut the bottom off again. Mine is drinking a full stand of water every day!

stargirl1701 · 22/12/2020 14:55

No. We brought ours inside on Sunday afternoon and we'll decorate it on Christmas Eve. It should last til the Twelfth Night.

Nowaynothappening · 22/12/2020 15:02

Always get ours on the first and we only had this problem when we bought our tree from the supermarket. Bought from local farms and B&Q, all still look fantastic by Christmas but the cheap supermarket one was bloody awful. So you get what you pay for usually. If you bought a good quality one and you’ve kept it watered and away from the radiator/fire then it should still be ok at this point.

SquareEyes3523 · 22/12/2020 15:06

Have you been watering it with lemonade? Keeps them from dying so early, we put ours up at the end of Nov and it's still going strong.

Parker231 · 22/12/2020 15:07

We got ours ten days ago. It’s taking lots of watering but still looking good. Taking it down on NYE so hopefully it will last until then.

Molehillfromamountain · 22/12/2020 15:09

I have removed some of the more delicate baubles from ours as I fear they may drop off and smash in the dead of night. (and scare meXmas Shock)
The side facing the french doors looks quite perky, the side facing the room not so much.
I think it will make it to new year though.

HopeAndDriftWood · 22/12/2020 15:13

Did you cut the end off? If not; you need to do that. It can’t drink properly otherwise!

I’d give it a dash of lemonade to perk it up regardless.

If all else fails, a few places like Homebase are giving theirs away now... but I’d try and save yours first, mostly because I’d feel bad incase anyone hasn’t got one at all yet.

We got ours on the 10th, it looks good so far - still pretty new looking. We did the usual night outside and then chop the end off malarkey.

ohidoliketobe · 22/12/2020 15:16

Despite getting the urge the first week, we held off until 10th before getting ours which is our usual time, and it's still looking good. One or two branches a bit droopy but minimal needle loss and still smelling amazing. Usually lasts until 3rd/4th so fingers crossed

PhilCornwall1 · 22/12/2020 15:25

We faked it this year after almost 18 years of a real one. 7 footer from B&Q reduced from almost 40 quid to a tenner, looks pretty good too.

The most important thing and you really have provided the public with the most vital information since March this year is:

Plus once the tree is up, it's much more socially acceptable to drink every day !!
