I've just realised..

that the tier 4 lockdown means no haircuts..again..and it will definitely last more than 3 weeks..

I didn't even feel human last lockdown because I went months without a haircut (and I was at home on furlough for most of it)..how will I face the paying public with literally a mop of overgrown hair?

And yes, I know it's trivial, but it does get you down.

Just to add, I have a very short haircut which means it goes really wrong very quickly if not cut every month.

This is precisely why DD age 13 is not allowed to cut her hair short. I've told her it's pointless until hairdressers are open reliably because if she loves it she'll spend the next 12 months flitting between hair that's just right (for 3 weeks at the rate hers grows) then the rest of the time fighting whatever it turns into until the next cut.

Best of luck taming yours. I grew out a pixie cut in my 20s and it was torturous at a variety of stages so you have my sympathy.

Would you consider wearing a wig? I had a short hair cut a few weeks ago and I've just seen a photo of the back of it. I hate it and there's bugger all I can do about it now, so I'm looking at buying a wig...

I'm now nearly one year since my last haircut as I was overdue when the first lock down came and am CEV.

I'm slowly acclimatising to the new shaggy me Smile

NoYouBloodyArent · 21/12/2020 22:21

I don't think a wig would feel right on me. I couldn't carry it off. Plus all my workmates would know that's what it was.

Bloody hell, it's depressing!

StillMedusa · 21/12/2020 23:25

I had shoulder length hair due a cut when the first lock down happened... failed to get it cut in the summer...
Now I have grey hair half way down my back and look like I fly to work on a broomstick! It's never grown this fast before!
Add in this horrible hair fuzzing weather and it's not a good look...

MrsIronfoundersson · 21/12/2020 23:29

I suddenly have curly/ wavy hair now after years of it being poker straight! It's also longer than I've had it in 20 years. I'm quite enjoying the wildness but put it with no make up and not doing my eyebrows for ages, I look like a wild woman (and don't give a damn).

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 21/12/2020 23:32

Do you suit a scarf or hat? I'd love to wear scarves because on some people they look so pretty, but unfortunately I'm not one of them.

SmileyClare · 21/12/2020 23:42

I would advise buying some clippers with long guard lengths and watching a lot of YouTube tutorials on cutting hair.

Usually with very short styles it's the back and sides that need trimming the most, you can get away with being longer on top and keep the shape of the style.

To graduate from shorter to longer on top, work your way up using the different numbered guards. It's not that tricky, you just need two big mirrors to see the sides and back and balls of steel. Wink

If there are any males in your household, practice on them first offer to do theirs first.

CrocodileFondue · 21/12/2020 23:55

I recently bit the bullet and cut my own hair, it's not nearly as bad as I'd thought and I'm quite impressed! Mine is shoulder length though (well it is now!), I imagine really short styles could be harder but maybe someone in your bubble could have a bash?

Failing that, just buy a lot of cute hats Wink

nancy75 · 21/12/2020 23:58

I made my DH cut mine to shoulder length, he used a long ruler & a pair of kitchen scissors - Vidal Sassoon he is not!
This is the first time I’ve be grateful for my mad curly hair, it hides a multitude of cutting errorsGrin

NoYouBloodyArent · 22/12/2020 06:35

It really doesn't work with very short hair.. Plus mine is very thick and grows quickly. It needs thinned out on top as well as cutting. I tried last lock down and ended up with a virtual mullet. It wasn't good.

OP posts:
SmileyClare · 22/12/2020 09:11

You can thin the top by combing sections and holding up vertically between your fingers, cut just a few mms off the ends using very sharp scissors. Then work through all top sections doing the same.

Only cut very slowly and gradually. You can get away with this for a few trims because you're following the line of a professional cut. After a while, you'll start to lose the shape and amateur mistakes become more obvious.

Fair enough if you don't think you can do this though. I just love cutting hair Grin

My only other suggestion is to try different taming products or styling tools? Maybe try a slicked back, tucked behind the ears look? Or straighten the longer parts and comb into a sweeping fringe/side parting.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/12/2020 09:19

Have you tried gel? It can be good for styling that length hair (use lots).

TodgerStrunk · 22/12/2020 09:23

I bought a thing off ebay that's basically a hair clip with a spirit level attached. It came with two clips of different sizes. You could try something like that in a mirror?
DD feathered the the front of her hair and cut in a fringe after a week of intense YouTube watching - it's all there.
And if you have lightweight cordless clippers with a long guard that would do the back and sides.

Mine's all one length and DD has learnt to cut it for me. She started off with the spirit level clip and now does it freehand (usually with a cackle just to wind me up) Do you have a small child that you could train up?

A wig ?! Isn't that a bit of an overreaction ?
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/12/2020 09:30

Scarves are great on growing out pixies, I've grown one lot about 6 times (indecisive!)

MargosKaftan · 22/12/2020 09:33

Winter hats are our saviour this year.

Wooly bobble ones. Felt smart ones. Also clips and hairbands.

Urgh.

SmileyClare · 22/12/2020 09:41

That made me laugh. Although lucky you, Todger it sounds as though your dd has a real flair for cutting hair. I think you're either creative in that way or not but like you say, intensive YouTube watching is very helpful in avoiding DIY disasters.

The I Cut My Own Hair disaster videos are strangely addictive too.

Derelictwreck · 22/12/2020 09:57

I've had my hair cut three times this year. Mid March, early Nov and then last week (in London). Starting to realise I predict lockdowns..... Everyone be warned when I next go.

TodgerStrunk · 22/12/2020 11:26

SmileyClare I'm not sure she's confident, I think she was using me as practice ("no one is going to see if it's not level") for her own hair first. I've cut all the DC's hair, and DH's in lockdown - needs must when the devil vomits in your kettle, after all - and all the time I'm thinking 'ssshhhiiiittttt this better not look too bad' Grin
