Who is on a journey in the poem which opens like this?
“ A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.
And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,”

It’s not that well-known a poem but the mention of the camels should enable people to guess it: it’s the Magi/3 Wise Men (TS Eliot)

A Christmas Carol Who was Scrooge's lost love? (Belle) What are the chapters called? (Staves) What does Scrooge send the Cratchitt family? (A large turkey)
Some of these answers aren’t correct. Eg It’s a goose, not a turkey. There’s no name mentioned of Scrooge’s lost love.
Horehound · 21/12/2020 18:56

Isn't it the prize turkey @daisypond?

What did Rod Campbell choose as the perfect present in Dear Santa

A cat

daisypond · 21/12/2020 18:58

No, it’s a goose:
“There never was such a goose. Bob said he didn't believe there ever was such a goose cooked. Its tenderness and flavour, size and cheapness, were the themes of universal admiration.”

NoGuestsCIothingOptionaI · 21/12/2020 18:59

Belle is Scrooge's former fiancee - he did love her but prioritised money over her. It is definitely a turkey. What have you read?

daisypond · 21/12/2020 19:00

Turkey is a relatively modern American tradition, so it can’t be that. Definitely not in Dickens’ time.

There is no mention of a fiancée name. It is not a turkey either definitely.

“Do you know the Poulterer’s, in the next street but one, at the corner?” Scrooge inquired.
“I should hope I did,” replied the lad.
“An intelligent boy!” said Scrooge. “A remarkable boy! Do you know whether they’ve sold the prize Turkey that was hanging up there?—Not the little prize Turkey: the big one?”
“What, the one as big as me?” returned the boy.
“What a delightful boy!” said Scrooge. “It’s a pleasure to talk to him. Yes, my buck!”
“It’s hanging there now,” replied the boy.
“Is it?” said Scrooge. “Go and buy it.”

daisypond · 21/12/2020 19:06

In the text there’s no mention of a fiancée name: she is simply referred to as "darling" or "my love".

FindHungrySamurai · 21/12/2020 19:06

It’s a turkey.

In Victorian London, when Dickens wrote the Carol, Christmas day was commonly celebrated by consuming, not a grand turkey, but rather a humble goose. At that time, the turkey was an exotic bird, too expensive for the common person to purchase.

The act of Scrooge sending a gigantic prize turkey to the Cratchits represented a radical change in not only Scrooge’s character, from the cynical miser to the generous spendthrift, but also personified a radical socioeconomic transformation.

daisypond · 21/12/2020 19:09

Oops, I am so wrong about the goose/turkey. It is a turkey. I hang my head in shame...

FindHungrySamurai · 21/12/2020 19:10

The Cratchit family get their own goose which is where all the quotes come from but Scrooge gets them a turkey.

Horehound · 21/12/2020 19:10

Omg is it a turkey or a goose?!
Lol I've googled and both seem right :s

OP posts:
Horehound · 21/12/2020 19:11

Lol thought so @daisypond.
I mean I'm remembering it from the Muppets Christmas carol 🤣

daisypond · 21/12/2020 19:16

I think any questions on Christmas Carol, you need to be clear if you mean Dickens’s text, or if you mean a film or TV version and, if so, which one. Some are very different to the book.
