Romney Marsh always makes me feel almost unbearably sad & overwhelmed. DH used to spend childhood holidays there but I hate it. I feel anxious as soon as I get near the town.
I live near Camden Town & I avoid going there as much as I can. I always feel uncomfortable even when having a nice time. The whole place just feels sad.

I agree about Camden! Strange, seedy atmosphere!

Caravans and caravan sites.
Chester.
Bristol.
I also once went to view a house for sale that just gave off the most evil aura I couldn’t get out of there quick enough!

i research family trees for a living and have visited 100s of cemetries, normally i find them quite peaceful and the atmosphere is relaxing.
i went to a huge one once and it was unusual in the fact there was a toilet block in the middle of it, i walked up a small path to it and past a grave, suddenly felt chilled and afraid, i hurried into the loo and told myself off for being silly, the day was bright and warm, why, i had scared myself i don't know. stupid really.
came back out and the feeling hit me again, i stopped in my tracks, so scared i couldn't move, i looked at the headstone next to me and it was a mans grave, i forget the details, but my dh called me and it was as if the spell was broken. the sun was warm again dh said i looked as if i'd seen a ghost, i hadn't but something didn't want me there.
have been to countless cemetries and church yards never experienced anything like it since.
perhaps the graves' occupant didn't like being next to the ladies loo Smile

@EventOfTheSeason

I thought Glencoe had an odd feel. Stunningly beautiful but a bit unsettling.

Totally agree about Camden.
Also not a fan of London Bridge

The Secret Bunker in Cheshire - now a museum but was a secret government bunker during the Cold War. Very creepy and my 3 year old DD had the screaming ab-dabs when we went there. They've since filmed an episode of Britain's Most Haunted Places there - not that I believe in any of that rubbish but it gives me the creeps nevertheless.

Also my school on the odd occasion when ive been the last person in the building. Very creepy.

Power stations.

Big war / cargo ships when they're docked up in a harbour.

Ballyboley forest on the road from Larne to Ballymena. Drove past it on a regular basis, always wanted to speed up to go past it, and then I started reading about it. Especially creepy (but beautiful) in twilight.

Me too. In 2011 with baby DD, she never really cried. (except at bedtime).

Went to view an apartment/house opposite a graveyard, DD acted odd as soon as we stepped in the hall. She then started howling and scratching at me to get back down the stairs as we walked up to the first floor apartment. I left the estate agent and DH standing on the landing and DD and I bolted for the front door. Once outside and around the corner she was fine again. Am so not woo but this spooked us both!

I forgot flickering fluorescent tube lights. Fluorescent lighting is a bit weird anyway, hard on my eyes or something, but flickering just freaks me out. I also hate car parks with a roof, eg underground or multi-story, especially at night. I used to live in a flat with a large underground car park that was spread under four buildings, so already a bit creepy. One evening I came home and the fluorescent light above my space was flickering. I heard a shuffling noise from somewhere way across the car park and sprinted out of there.

Portmeirion - weird, creepy place reminding me of that equally weird fictional town Dulock (sp?!) in Shrek. Couldn’t wait to leave.
And submarines make me feel sick.
And lastly - the sea. Terrifies me what might lurk beneath the surface. And it’s so vast. I love being by the sea but I don’t go IN.

Oh yes, Hack Green the nuclear bunker in Cheshire! Went once and had the most hideous nightmare afterwards, ds usually very placid became extremely fretful and agitated as we walked round. Felt paranoid about the way the staff were watching us..

Apologies to anyone who lives there but Letchworth, Herts always gives me the utter shivers whenever we drive through it.

MiL leaves nearby and we often have to take her there as she doesn't drive. It just has the weirdest vibe about it and I always end up feeling nauseous. So odd.

DS1 like many his age is really into minecraft atm, however the woodland mansions really creep me out, no idea why, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, they are just so big and dark Grin. Actually a lot of things about minecraft are creepy, the music is another thing.

@nuitdesetoiles

My DS had a total freak out in Llangollen, said he didn't like the atmosphere. We were booked in to stay for a weekend... He was nervy and on edge the whole time...

@nuitdesetoiles that's so weird!

I stayed nearby a few years ago and we decided to walk up Dinas Bran, the hill with the ruined castle on top.

About 2/3 up I had to stop - it was as if everything in my body was telling me not to walk further and I couldn't work out why, just had a terrible sense of doom . I had to sit down and wait for a very bemused DP to carry on alone and then come back again. Never been so happy to get off a hill in all my life!

I felt oppressed and unsettled in Betswys-y-Coed and Hebden Bridge. Both pretty places but they felt sad and ‘dark’ somehow.

nuitdesetoiles · 21/12/2020 14:06

Hebden Bridge can err towards that vibe. Again I think it's the new age traveller/ketamine thing. And the steam punk festival completely freaks my head out!

I live near Leiston in Suffolk and I always find it a depressing place...
I always shudder going over Saddleworth Moor too...
There is a creepy lane between where my parents lived and where I live. It's near a church. My Dad had a business driving people round local pubs in horse-drawn carriages then back to his house where my sister had cooked dinner. The journey took you down this lane... My late DH for years had a burning urge to dress up like Dick Turpin and ride out in front of the carriages with a big fake gun..Thankfully he never did!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣

Abandoned boat houses with creaking old wooden boats chained up.
Marshes generally.
I actually love graveyards and cemeteries and find them relaxing!

Lowestoft felt very weird and intense when I was there briefly, I lived in Norwich for a year and found much of Norfolk odd. Then again I'm a northern lass and I like a hill or 2 so think it was all the flatness...

Any seaside town which has houses painted in different colours, especially when the paint is peeling and scuffed. Even creepier when there are old, run down arcades and fairground rides.

In fact, any fairground. Not so much Alton Towers etc, but places like Blackpool. The tinny music and lurid murals and rusty machinery feels so menacing.

Pinocchio creeps me out more than ANY actual horror film.

A holiday house we stayed in in France once. We only ended up there because the place we had booked had a caterpillar infestation the day before we were due to arrive.

I had the creeps there from the day we arrived to the day we left (a day early).
