Jersey - I've spent time on lots of islands, but Jersey felt strangely sinister, possibly because of everything surrounding Haut de la Garenne.

I think there is a lot of complexity & darkness in small, rural communities.

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/12/2020 23:09

@bobbikato yes to carpet shops. I remember Allied Carpets in Burnt Oak and also the carpet department in Clements in Watford. They were often deserted especially towards the end of the day. And those huge towering rolls of carpets.

York Minster. The outside stonework has such an aged feel to it, and is beautiful to look at - but inside it is utterly soul-less, Godless, feels completely devoid of love or humanity. I feel desolate each time I go near.

I am the complete opposite. I find it peaceful. I love it and can spend hours in there.

Plymouth - walking from Stoke into the town - there was a 1970s bit - just depressing and glum.

@StanfordPines I'm so chuffed you recognised Batcombe!! The Vardys were the main land owners then. Were you in Chetnole or Leigh? I used to ride at a riding school in Leigh. The steep lane that runs from Batcombe hill down to the Church is pretty amazing. I used to shudder every time I had to go past the Church. My mum thought I was being ridiculous. 😆 I also used to go to Melbury Bibb to visit a friend. That was another forgotten hamlet.

I don’t really want to say where as my parents still live there and the village is tiny.
I know Chetnole and Leigh well. I used to work for Fudges when they were still in Leigh and spent many happy years with my best friend in Chetnole.
The Miz-maze in Leigh is odd too.

OP mentions Llangollen. I don’t know if many people know but it has a very seedy underbelly. Serious drug problems there, and some of the pubs are as rough as hell. I live nearby and have always found it odd and depressing.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/12/2020 09:56

The m62.

Hotel corridors.

nuitdesetoiles · 25/12/2020 12:18

@GoldenLabbie it's interesting you say that. Could certainly sense something, such a shame as is so pretty as well. The pubs WERE awful tbh!! Me and DS went for a pizza (which was also awful!) , he was shaking on the way back to our accommodation gripping my hand saying "mummy I don't like it here!". Surrounding countryside beautiful though..

I can tell you some stories. Like the band who played in a pub there and all seemed to go well. Then when they asked for their fee the at the end of the night the landlord told them they were shit and that he wasn’t paying. They argued the toss and he got all of his regulars together and they were basically threatens to leave immediately or else.

My cousin was also attacked in another pub there because she apparently looked at one of the regulars in a ‘funny’ way. Same thing happened. When her partner and friends challenged it and tried to stand up for her they were rounded on by the regulars and threatened. Leave or else.

Fucking awful rough shit hole. It is pretty and has some nice shops but I would never go drinking there..

Dugee · 25/12/2020 14:13

Barton Bridge but it's not inexplicable, it's the teeny safety barrier on a high bridge, with fast moving motorway traffic going over it.

Geppili · 25/12/2020 14:23

@StanfordPines ooohhh the Fudges delivery van! Lardy cake and a cottage bloomer! Heaven.

MrsOrMiss · 25/12/2020 17:55

We used to be the first flight of the day coming 'home' and were often first off the plane, it always felt like The Langoliers, silent empty airports, very creepy. Still makes me cringe.

My husbands firm were demolishing a 1970's building in the middle of a city. He took me on a tour after hours, everything was ok until we started going into the cellar, with each step I could feel deep, mournful sorrow, it just kept building until I couldn't take it anymore and had to leave. During the demolition, they discovered graves. Turns out, they were plague pits which were never recorded. I've never been back to the new building so I have no clue if the cellars are still oppressive.

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/12/2020 18:06

@pickingdaisies

Had to drive through savernake forest eow to visit bf, very creepy. I always worried about the car breaking down in the middle of it. Anyone dressed up in a character suit, like football mascots, or bloody Pudsey Bear. (And don't get me started on Mr Blobby!)
There was a thread on here ages ago from someone who had a horrible, spooky experience in Savernake forest....like properly terrifying. I was scared just reading it.
52andblue · 25/12/2020 18:29

The most recent house I owned. On moving (in) day, I crossed the threshold (removal men right behind me), stopped dead, and said to (ex) H: 'we've made a mistake'. He was furious. Turns out, no one ever stays there long. I hated it, for 10 years, and I'd recently lived in a house which had had a murder and suicide in (my bedroom, direct previous owners) without a problem.

52andblue · 25/12/2020 18:37

Posted about this before perhaps, but I then Googled it and it came up having previously been listed for sale as a 'haunted house'. Erk!

Forgot to mention, York Minster - my DD2 when she was 4 refused to go in, started crying and screaming. We gave it a miss, she's still not a fan of Churches, but York minister terrified her.

We stayed at Lumley Castle a few years ago, they upgraded our room, great bath in the en-suite turret room, raised four poster bed, very nice. We - well I - were very chuffed. We went for our meal, but the entertainment dragged on a bit so DH went off to bed. 15 mins later he called me and asked if I were going to bed soon. Er no, I'm not 12, he then begged me to come up, he had heard foot steps in our room and had given himself a fright. Of course I went up, mostly to tell him to stop being such a twit. As soon as I reached the door, I could 'feel' something was off. DH came to the door, he was really shaken. The room still felt funny, but I told him we'd down the night nurse and sleep through it - it's a four poster bed!! And we left the lights on.
He slept like a baby, I didn't sleep very at all, felt like someone was stood next to the bed all night. I couldn't wait to get up and get breakfast so we could leave. I've refused to ever go back, even for a murder mystery dinner.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 25/12/2020 18:47

A small town in Ireland. Around 30 years ago a man annihilated his family and when I go visit my dear friends there and we go walking, the temperature noticeably dips a few degrees. Even in the height of summer, there is a chill as we walk past. My dog pulls at her leash trying to get past as quickly as possible.

JovialNickname · 25/12/2020 20:29

@nuitdesetoiles

My DS had a total freak out in Llangollen, said he didn't like the atmosphere. We were booked in to stay for a weekend... He was nervy and on edge the whole time...
Totally understandable as Llangollen is a shithole

Thelwall Viaduct too and the QE2 Bridge at Dartford crossing 😱
CleanQueen123 · 26/12/2020 08:14

@yellowsubmarines I've spent a lot of time in Marlborough and Savernake always gave me the creeps, even in broad daylight. Lots of spooky stories about that forest.

CleanQueen123 · 26/12/2020 08:39

@LadyFlumpalot that would have been my worst nightmare. Interestingly I had to ropey KAs in succession when I was with the DP that lived in Marlborough and it was a constant source of anxiety that the car would break down in Savernake.

I used to get a horrible feeling of oppression the minute I drove in and wouldn't relax until I got to the other side and went down the hill. The big Tesco was like a shining beacon of safety at the bottom Grin

The other weird one in Marlborough is the blocked up railway tunnel. I didn't even know it was there. Ex DP just took me for a walk one day and the closer we got to it, the worse I felt.

Once we got to the tunnel I lasted about a minute before I practically sprinted back the way we'd come.

It was a beautiful bright winter day but it felt like the trees were leaning in on me and there was something that didn't want us there in the tunnel.

InTheseUncertainTimes · 26/12/2020 08:40

I really had to think! I know many of the places mentioned here (and live in one!) but can't connect any creepy feelings to them. A lot of things (as opposed to places) creep me out, but there's usually some reason that seems logical to me.

But I can think of one place that I found extremely creepy for no reason I can think of: Islandmagee in NI! I had to go there daily for a while for work purposes. Nothing ever went wrong for us in there. We had some crap weather and there was some general misery about it all, but that's hardly unique to that place. There was just this strange feeling. I always felt like the people (despite being perfectly nice) and also the place itself just didn't want us there. I always felt uneasy and hypervigilant, and couldn't wait to get out of there every day.

I agreed with the posters who mention London Bridge. I absolutely hate The Shard. If the eye of sauron appeared at the top one day I wouldn’t be surprised.

It’s always packed with people waiting to go up there dressed to the nines. I wonder if they come back as zombies.

The new London Bridge station has a weird vibe too. My friend’s DD refuses to go through Borough Market and I can see why she hates it. The overwhelming smells of salami and cheese and the oppressive atmosphere and the fucking Shard looming over it all.

Agree about London Bridge, especially Guy's Hospital looming over it and some of the platforms 😱
