My best friend now lives right on the edge of savernake forest, I sent the infamous story off here.

We went for a walk around there in the dark recently, came off the main path it and saw a few ropes hanging down from trees, like rope swings without the swings. These led to a huge tree with ropes hanging all the way around, was v creepy.

Probably was old rope swings but gave off strong Blair witchy vibes and we legged it home!

Gibraltar- the rock was ok (if you don’t mind being pawed by monkeys 🐒😬) but the town is vile - really odd atmosphere, I felt quite threatened, we paced the streets looking for somewhere nice to stop for a drink/ lunch but just kept wandering in circles- the traffic felt so loud and aggressive, I developed an awful headache , I can’t really explain how oppressive and nasty it felt to me. And fake - like it was trying to re create a typical British town but failing.

CarrieMoonbeams · 23/12/2020 23:16

My friend bought a cottage which, from the outside anyway, was just absolutely perfect. It was like a child's drawing of a house - red door in the middle, windows perfectly symmetrical either side and a chimney for the open fire. I was so looking forward to visiting.

Oh my goodness, it was so scary inside! It had a galleried landing, and I constantly felt like someone was up the stairs, peering at us from over the top of the bannister. Horrible, it was such a malevolent atmosphere. I never mentioned it to my friend but she lived there happily for years. It's made me feel really uneasy even typing this, I normally don't allow myself to think about it.

I've been to Glastonbury, Bath, London, Keswick and lots of other places mentioned here without any problems at all, but Christ, that cottage scared the giblets out of me!! Oh and I absolutely won't hear a word against Bristol - the details are too outing as I tell loads of people IRL about this, but I've been there twice with my previous job and the people I met were the kindest, most thoughtful people ever.

backwardsuptheescalator I had to smile when you posted “ we thought we’d wake up to find we’d been murdered” lol 🤣

JudyGemstone That mental image has got me thinking about suicide forest in Japan Aokigahara, so sad, upsetting and definitely creepy I would never go there in a million years.

Gncq · 23/12/2020 23:30

I can't stand looking at reservoir plugs in photos and understandably will never ever wish to be near one in real life.
Same with Dams. Those high solid walls of concrete holding back so much water, especially when the "doors" open and the water all comes gushing out through them. Scares the crap out of me!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 23/12/2020 23:36

Folks on here are chatting shit, it's very much not creepy.

Of course they/we are! This form of visceral reaction to things and places is very much irrational; if it wasn't, then everyone would react in precisely the same way to exactly the same ones. Still fun to talk about it though, like the scary stories we used to tell around the camp fires in the girl guides.

It's even more fun to speculate that 'reason' isn't all there is and to indulge the power of the imagination. Disclaimer: yes, the Savernake Forest story was clearly and evidently a creative writing exercise: still a good one, though.

Loving this thread!

My weird ones are underwater chains/anchors/wrecks - despite being an absolute water baby, loving wild swimming and kayaking and freediving. I just nope the fuck out if I see rusting stuff underwater Blush

I hate bricked up windows and boarded up buildings, especially pubs - they just feel so sad and abandoned.

Love photos of urbexing where people go into abandoned buildings and photograph them, but the only time I've ever tried I ran away in terror after seeing the first room with a hospital bed still in it Blush

No specific places I can think of though!

DesiderataH · 23/12/2020 23:45

My aunts house. I just don't feel comfortable there. She is so welcoming but the house itself seems to give off bad vibes. It's always cold, even in the height of summer, and I find it very oppressive.

Stevenage gives me the creeps. The main shopping centre is a grubby, bit sleazy, smelly concrete hellhole. I hate going there. Also I find Milton Keynes absolutely ghastly. I find huge shopping centres overwhelming, and I'm always scared of getting lost

  • Railway tracks, especially when the live rail hisses when a train approaches.
  • Freight trains
  • Cranes
  • the sound of distant thunder approaching or moving away, especially at night. Ditto the sight of distant lightning at night.
  • Air raid siren.
DecemberDiana · 23/12/2020 23:51

Concrete.
Modern houses with deliberate exposed concrete really puzzle me. It's the texture / colour.

I agree with dam walls too which made me think I just hate seeing any expanse of concrete.

Nonamesavail · 23/12/2020 23:53

Canal locks
Cliff car parks
Unused rooms in large buildings

21833efb · 23/12/2020 23:55

Bamburgh Castle and the surrounding area.

Norfolk - felt quite uneasy every time I've been there.

Orangesox · 24/12/2020 00:22

Agree with those who’ve stated Saddleworth Moor, it’s such a desolate and inhospitable of an area even without considering the abject horrors that have occurred in the area. Gives me the absolute creeps and I hate driving over there - the temperature suddenly drops which doesn’t help with the creepy feeling!

Imber village gives me a similar vibe - used to go there a lot for military training exercises and couldn’t wait to leave, no particular reason that I can pin point. The woods around there are the things of nightmares and I’m not generally a scaredy cat.

Cenotes are an absolute nope for me, I’m really not a “woo” person but I can only assume it’s the whole “sacrificial portal to the underworld” element that makes me feel deeply nauseous around them. It can’t just be the depth aspect as I’ve spent my whole life at sea in one way or another.

Threads like this are really interesting!
Not really sure if this counts as it's not whole areas/things etc but certain streets I find odd and don't like to walk or drive over day or night, I don't know why as they are all perfectly normal streets with houses, shops and no "lonely" sections etc.
As a teenager I used to prefer to run home through a dark dodgy path than go along one certain road and I've never known what it is I don't like about them but something just doesn't feel right, none of my friends or family think this though about the streets I think it about so who knows!

SilverOtter · 24/12/2020 00:28

Underwater caves.

I remember watching a documentary or something ages ago. Some of it was filmed in Florida and they were in this forestry/marshy area. There were things that just looked like puddles but they were entrances to these underwater cave systems. Made me (and still does, when I picture it!) feel physically sick!

There was a nuclear bunker under my old works building. We used it for storage and I would often go down there alone. But I never explored it all. Time had stood still inside with big maps still up on the walls

1manwenttomow · 24/12/2020 00:51

Ohh actually some more - public toilets, shopping place toilets are fine but ones in cemeteries or parks, beach fronts are a definite no no, lifts also creep me out, my nan used to live in a high rise on the 15th floor and I hated going to her flat and having to go in the lift.
When I was little if we were going into town, the parking was on a sainsburys car park and sometimes we had to nip in, I remember crying saying can't we just go to tesco later as it felt so wierd there it was knocked down about 20 years ago now and the whole site is still unused despite being central to trams/buses/colleges/shops/bingo/leisure centre.

1dayatatime · 24/12/2020 01:03

@NemosPoorlyFinn

When I was a kid I visited wookey hole the caves where fine but the inside museum part gave me the creeps

Just felt like it went on forever and I was never going to leave 😬
Definitely a strange feeling that I haven't had since

+++++++

I had exactly the same experience- caves are fine but the museum scared the bejesus out of me. Seemed like there was no way out, even when I was in the car in the car park and heading home I didn't feel safe.

CuddlyDudley71 · 24/12/2020 01:18

We had a similar experience at a campsite attached to a pub outside Hay on Wye! We camped down by the river with a group of crusty psychopaths it turned out...our daughter was little and we never slept-loud arguments and an oppressive atmosphere.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 24/12/2020 01:45

I'm a teacher and I avoid the Headmasters office at all costs. I'm not at all woo, but it seriously gives me the creeps. I actually go slightly light headed in it.

The school is a former all boys Catholic boarding school though and his office used to be a priests bedroom. I have no idea if this is why it gives me the creeps, I hope not.

Pinksands1 · 24/12/2020 04:52

Paternoster lifts........probably because I'm claustrophobic but the thought of being in a little box and having to jump out at just the right time.....urrrghh no!

eurochick · 24/12/2020 05:34

Hotel corridors also freak me out. I blame The Shining.

The only place I have really felt a bad vibe is a place called The Fools' Tower in Vienna. It had apparently been variously used as a mental asylum and a place where the Nazis experimented on people. It felt wrong and I couldn't wait to get out of there.
