I must admit that this gives me the serious creeps...

I think a lot of it is what you're used to. I must admit to finding a lot of the South of England a bit "off", places like Bath and Salisbury although aesthetically pretty spook me. However a lot of posters are understandably spooked by the North which feels alien to me!

Just looking at the photo made me feel weird, not in a good way!
CigarsofthePharoahs · 22/12/2020 10:57

Bristol.
I've been there precisely once and we were trying to get to the Ikea. DH was trying to follow the sat nav, but it kept directing us round the back of the store. We ended up picking our way through a variety of side streets.
I felt awful there. Really scared. The houses just looked wrong and there were some big graffiti murals that freaked me out. Then I realised that despite it being mid morning on a Saturday, there was nobody about at all. No pedestrians, no other cars.
I was so glad when we found our way to Ikea and I've never been back there.

Ventriloquist dummies. They are just awful, aren't they? I have to admit I did enjoy the film Dead Silence.

Teddy1970 · 22/12/2020 11:08

Oh yes, ventriloquist dummies, awful things, it's when the dummy is sat in a chair grinning from ear to ear and then I think it's going to turn it's head and look at you, creepy.

So I read this thread before bed last night. Big mistake. I started to hear sounds as if someone/something was padding around upstairs and coming into my room and looking at the bed. I sleep towards the window with my back to the door so was too petrified to turn over. I know it was probably that funny thing that happens when your knackered/on the verge of dropping off scaring yourself shitless reading woo threads on MN. It definitely wasn't DD getting up as I know her sounds IYSWIM?

So yea, overactive imagination for sure but crikey I was spooked. Confused

Ozgirl75 · 22/12/2020 11:27

@Lonelycrab it’s called thalassophobia.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 22/12/2020 11:35

I was miserable in Brighton. I just didnt click with it so am delighted to hear im not alone. Otherwise the statue in gloucester of Bishop Hooper. I just dont like it.

nuitdesetoiles · 22/12/2020 11:46

I find a LOT of hotels very creepy and unsettling. Shrigley Hall to name one, my overactive imagination goes into overdrive and I imagine murders, drug deals, stashes of guns, all sorts.... I tend to find the generic chain hotels like jury's Inn less so so usually go for them when working away. The individual antiquated ones are complete freakery, stayed in one in Neath South Wales once. Felt fortunate to get out alive...

Yes! I remember seeing a pic of that a while ago and thinking how dreadful it was😱
CarolinaWeeper · 22/12/2020 12:08

Driving down roads where there are trees on both sides and their branches go over the road. They're really pretty but I just imagine a branch snapping and falling onto the car.

Driving on country lanes at night if I'm on my own in the car.

Walking upstairs in the dark then looking back down the dark staircase, I always feel like someone is there watching me.... I hate my stupid overactive imagination!

I love this! Especially at night.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 22/12/2020 12:23

Redcar.

All the locals were standing on their doorsteps silently watching us walk by.

Ladybower? Terrifies me too.

The road up there from Glossop scares me too.

The snake pass?

@nuitdesetoiles Hadfield is indeed on the Manchester - Flowery Field - Glossop - Hadfield line.

Weirdly there's a part of Hadfield that had an awful oppressive atmosphere but I can't remember where it was. Somewhere near a little row of shops (not the town centre). I was walking through on a much longer walk and couldn't wait to get away from there.

Logantrical · 22/12/2020 13:07

Polphail village in Scotland It's gone now but this place gave me the creeps. It was very eerie walking around there.

ReggaePerrin · 22/12/2020 13:16

I feel very uncomfortable visiting churches, not when they're full for weddings or funerals but if there are just a few people in. I find it quite suffocating. Maybe my sins are catching up with me Xmas Grin

RhubarbTea · 22/12/2020 13:36

More understandably the isolation cells at Auschwitz I had to leave immediately. Had the most awful sensation in there

Yes. Same here, I felt that way about the whole basement of Block 11, I became suffused with dread and had to fight the urge to run back up the stairs as I was walking down. It was horrible.

A place I worked at as a cleaner once had a terrible atmosphere in the bathroom, it was a day centre for adults with disabilities and so the bathroom had a hoist and bath etc. The room gave me the creeps and I always felt like I was being watched when I was in there.

Agree about Brighton and Bristol. Also, although I like it visually, Totnes in Devon has the most weird claustrophobic atmosphere ever. I'm always glad to leave. It feels oppressive and unpleasant.

Also - my last rental property. I moved because of rats in the ceiling which the LL wasn't dealing with and everyone thought I was mad for moving house, but in addition to the rats the atmosphere in the front bedroom was so awful I couldn't bear being in there. I spent months sleeping downstairs on the living room floor until we moved. Every time I walk past that house I smile with relief I don't have to live there any more.

JimmyJabs · 22/12/2020 13:38

Places don't bother me, but I have a long list of "things" that make me feel edgy or anxious, none of them logical. So:

Metal things that have been painted, especially in bright primary colours, and especially especially if the paint has started to flake.

Fair-haired people with sallow complexions, such as Ethan from Casualty!

Exposed copper wiring.

Anything made from hessian.

Finding a piece of rusting, abandoned farm equipment when I'm walking somewhere rural. Actually, anything rusty in any context.

Soft toys with big glass eyes.

Scrimshaw.

LabCoatPocket · 22/12/2020 14:36

@PeachesBright

My DS and I have that colouring - very dark brown eyes, red hair and pale skin, I didn't know it freaked people out. Although, I do get what you mean. It is a bit odd.

We often get told we are unusual, maybe that is code for freaky 🤣

bendmeoverbackwards · 22/12/2020 14:41

This thread is fascinating. I’ve been to Brighton and Glastonbury and don’t remember any unpleasant feeling but they clearly affect lots of people. The human psyche is weird!

HardCandyChristmas · 22/12/2020 16:10

I used to live in Brighton but never felt spooked.

DP has had several "paranormal experiences" and recently was sure he saw a ghost "crossing the road" by Preston Park.

I use inverted commas because I am not woo and very sceptical but he's convinced.

redbuttons · 22/12/2020 16:25

I visited Ellis Island in New York harbour a few years ago, the first port of call for the millions of immigrants seeking shelter in the U S A. I found it overwhelming oppressive, the great hall, the photos, the air of sadness almost palpable, I couldn't get off the island quick enough.

kobo · 22/12/2020 16:53

This thread had a theme of caves/ cellars/ underground places there must be a deep primal reason for that.
