How much are PS4 and Nintendo switch game downloads?

I got ds a PS4 store voucher (£35) and Nintendo voucher (£25). DH has just told me they’re useless as games are at least £50. Is that right (he’s not used his PS4 for years so I’m hoping it’s gone down!)? How much do I need to top up for each to be useable?

Have a look at argos or Amazon?

ChristmasBubble · 20/12/2020 23:37

Depends on the game. Loads are less than that. PlayStation Store are always having sales. It's only the brand new releases that are £50.

ChristmasBubble · 20/12/2020 23:38

It's online as is the Nintendo store so you can have a look.

@WingingWonder Amazon and Argos are physical games though , so not the same?
@ChristmasBubble I did search and they seemed to be £25-50 so £35 seemed ok. Are the under £50 all old/ less desirable? I’d just gone for what I thought was above average price Confused

Tbh it depends on the game. Big name new releases will be about £50 (think new Hyrule Warriors game for switch) but there are plenty of games out there for less.

scissy · 20/12/2020 23:50

Missed your response - if they really want the big name new release you've got them most of the way there - otherwise it gives them a chance to discover something new. Some of the best games I've played in the switch have been indie games that cost £10-15.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/12/2020 23:54

I really don’t know what he’d want! He had absolutely nothing on his ideas list for Christmas so I thought money/ vouchers for the future would be the way to go... starting to think I’ve screwed up totally.

Most new games are £50, on PS4 this comes down / will be reduced in the sale, so if they're savvy they needn't pay more than 25-30. Nintendo is a mixed bag, their top games are £45-50 and don't really budge - Pokemon Let's Go / Sword and Shield, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart etc. are still £50, and rarely go into sale. However, they have a ton of quality games ranging from £9-30 that do go into the sales and you can get a lot of cracking games for that - most are games made for PC originally or x-platform (Trine, Don't Starve, My Life in Portia, Cat Quest etc). From this point of view, as long as they don't exclusively play Nintendo's exclusive 'top tier' games, they can get plenty of games to enjoy and hours of fun. If the intention was to gift them something that would cover every game possible then it would need to be £50 (I don't think that's necessary tbh). There are also cheaper way to buy the expensive switch games like Amazon / Argos sales and Gamivo for online keys. Got animal crossing for £35 from Gamivo, and never seen it cheaper anywhere else. I reckon what you've given is a good amount and you can always top up the account further in the future if they end up saving it for something

The only problem with downloading rather than buying the cartridge thing is that your Switch will quickly run out of hard drive space.

ChristmasBubble · 20/12/2020 23:57

I think it's fine. It depends what he wants to spend it on but he can always top up with his own money if he wants to get something more expensive.

PlayStation have sales all the time and the new games get reduced eventually.

Nintendo don't reduce their titles very often so possibly that one is more of a problem but there are loads of third party games for £25 and under.

LindaEllen · 20/12/2020 23:58

There's lots of cheaper games (and some free!) on the online store. Obviously the brand new ones will be more, but I got a game for £7 last week and it's brilliant. The Nintendo store certainly has lots of cheapies :).

Maria1990 · 21/12/2020 00:04

Also, both accounts can be topped up, so they aren't 'useless' at all, you add the balance to the account rather than it working like a normal gift card you have to carry around and if your DS really wanted something that wasn't affordable there's nothing to stop you being like oh okay let's top it up eh? And no obligation to link a payment method (so no chance of accidentally spending more than intended). If money is an issue, you could let him choose which one he wants and giving the total amount on one system instead (returning the other card). Tbh my mum did this when we were younger and I was over the moon just to have any amount of money to spend on games as she often... missed the mark when she was trying to choose for us 😂

All he really plays on the switch is Pokemon Sword and Shield. I was thinking it’d cover an upgrade/ expansion? God, I hate tech! It was so much easier when he wanted toys!

The expansion pass is £26.99, so you've only misjudged by £1.99 (not that they do a £27 voucher). It opens up a lot of content, so well worth it if that's all he plays :)
Clymene · 21/12/2020 12:26

You can just add £2 to the Nintendo account if he wants to get the expansion pass. But there are plenty of indie games retailing at under £20. And they have sales too
