Tipping supermarket delivery driver?

I'm doing all my Christmas shopping online this year, and I have all the fresh food (hopefully!) arriving on the 23rd.

I'd like to tip the driver, as I can only imagine how busy and stressful the Christmas deliveries will be be for him or her. Does anyone who works at a supermarket know if accepting tips is allowed? I don't want to put anyone in an awkward situation if it's not.

It's Sainsbury's, in case the policy varies by supermarket!

Cash tips are allowed.
Dont give an item as then they could be accused of stealing from the deliveries

Pretty sure it’s not allowed. Plus the drivers get paid way more than the pickers who would have been doing your shopping from 3am 🙂

I always tip supermarket delivery drivers. 3-5 quid. I've never had one say it's contrary to policy.

5 quid and a BIG thank you.i'm now disabled and SO having my shopping delivered by my smiling helpful delivery man is SO appreciated.
But I'm American, where tipping is the norm.

Thank you all! Seems like the general consensus is that cash will be okay, so I'll do that.

I agree that it's not quite fair to the pickers, and I do appreciate them as well, but that's the way it's set up, and I'd rather tip the person I can than not do it at all.

Officially we're not supposed to accept but on the rare occasion we do get tipped then i consider it rude not to. I do however emphasise before accepting that it's not necessary and it's our job.
I probably get a tip once or twice a week... if that.

Which store are you referring to? Do you actually work there or know someone working there and know their pay or are you assuming? The green store I work for pays the drivers the same as pickers, car park attendants, replenishers. Bakery and pizza get paid more...go figure. We have to go out there in all weather risking our licence and safety daily to meet delivery target times. We have to load over a tonne on to the van twice a day and then deliver the 2 tonnes. (Did I mention the freezing weather and pouring rain?) If that isn't enough then we sometimes (borderline usually) have to come back to store because the loaders have been stacking our stuff on the wrong load and we have 2 totes of some other drivers load and someone has 2 of yours. Which then means I leave late and have to pay extra for child minding. It's only because I enjoy meeting and greeting my customers (mostly regular now) that I carry on doing the job. It's definitely not more financially lucrative. Oh...and your are unofficially expected to take your breaks on the road while you're driving to make up for lost time due to traffic or assisting customers with extra needs. When you get back from the first run you have to load the second and by then you have 2 or 3 managers hanging around looking at their watches. Most of the pickers do an excellent job and they deserve what they get and more but their job involves zero risk in the comfort of a warm store surrounded by 100+ colleagues, have breaks when they feel like a break and go home when they are supposed to. I don't see the relevance of them starting at 3am...they finish at 10am if they start at 3am. You make it sound like they work from 3am to midnight🤣

Rant over.

If tips are allowed where you work then surely you could just give the details of the customers that gave the item and the store could ring and confirm? They would need to prove you stole it (van cctv?) Innocent until proven and all that.
