Pan smoking cause?

My DS has said that some of the pans I sent him off to Uni with start smoking when he uses them. Apparently, only some of the pans I sent him with smoke in use.

I was wondering if perhaps the hobs were induction ones in his Uni flat. If you use an unsuitable pan on an induction hob, would it cause the pan to smoke when being heated?

Thanks in advance.

Could it be that he is not washing the bottom of the pans properly or that the hob is not clean?

Or the oil he is using in them has a low smoke point? (ie if you use olive oil instead of rapeseed it smokes when it reaches a lower temperature, whereas rapeseed will need a very much hotter pan to smoke)

I will check both these things with him!

An induction hob wouldn't even attempt to heat an unsuitable pan.

I'd assume there is dirt on the job/pan or the pan is left to get hot with or with out oil.
