Is there such a thing as an iPhone charging cable that actually works for more than a few months?

If so can you please please please share where you got one. Apple ones don’t, cheap ones don’t. Ones with extra long cables don’t. Ones with short cables don’t. Where can I find one?????

Amazon basics with a cord (fabric) cable - no issues

JollyAndBright · 19/12/2020 11:55

What are you doing with them that makes them break so easily?

DP and I have had iPhones for over a decade and still have just about every Apple lightning cable we have received with the phones still in use.

The only way they are known to break ‘easily’ is if you are bending them over/under to use your phone when it’s on charge,
maybe you should look at how you are managing to break every cable you have rather than looking for ‘better’ cables, it would probably save you a lot more money.

I saw something ages ago about putting a springs from a clicky ball point pen over the cable where it joins to the lightning attachment and the usb part to help protect it from breakage, maybe you could try that.

SisterMichael · 19/12/2020 11:57

I wish I knew Jolly. I’ve read that about the spring but it’s not that they get frayed - they look fine but just don’t charge any more.

As long a you don't use the phone while it's on charge they should last ages. They don't like being moved about much.

SquishyFishy · 19/12/2020 11:59

In all the many years I have had iPhones and iPads, I have only had one charging cable break, and that was the original one, and it only finally gave up last year.

Perhaps have a think about how you use them 🤷‍♀️

This has been fab for DD whose cables seem to break a week after she gets them! The 2m option is useful as 1m is just a tad too short.

LutinDeSapin · 19/12/2020 12:06

Are you sure it's the cable and not the socket on you phone filled with dust?
We still have every cable from as long as I remember and they all charge.

pinkbalconyrailing · 19/12/2020 12:09

what are you doing that they stop working?

mine last ages. I still use the one that came with my first device about 8 years ago.

what doesn't last ime are usb adapter thingies, especially those with more than one usb connector.

Soubriquet · 19/12/2020 12:10

this one!!

MrsPnut · 19/12/2020 12:10

Anker ones every time. We have had them for years along with anker battery packs.

Do you bend the cable under the phone or to the side when you are using the phone when it’s on charge?

Could you start charging it overnight to avoid having to use it while it’s on charge during the day?
That’s what I try to do.

The only way cables can really break is if they are either over heating , usually this is from using a questionable/dodgy usb plug, or from the internal cabling being broken from being bent.

The best way you could avoid this is by putting something over the cable to help you avoid bending it, either use something like a think hemp cord or firm yarn and braid around the cable would probably work.

Chemenger · 19/12/2020 12:13

IKEA cables are excellent.

SisterMichael · 19/12/2020 12:15

Thanks Elemental that’s really helpful. I find the charge doesn’t last all day but I am going to try and not use it whilst it’s charging now.

Anker

BashfulClam · 19/12/2020 12:23

I’ve had a woven one from Amazon for 4 years, still works.

BlueJag · 19/12/2020 12:27

Don't leave them plugged in they burn out. I second amazon basics they work great.

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/12/2020 12:28

Definitely amazon.

murbblurb · 19/12/2020 12:29

deliberate shit design. A)these things guzzle power so need frequent charging and B) the charging port is designed to break.

don't use the phone while it is charging. Go outside and do something else.

SoupDragon · 19/12/2020 12:33

I've never broken a cable but DSs break them all the time.

I have cables by "UnBreakcable" in the 6ft length and they've been great. I've had the Amazon basics ones too (which were fine until the kids stole them 🙄)

nosswith · 19/12/2020 13:24

I have had one for four years. Are you plugging it in such that the cable had to be bent at all times?

rslsys · 19/12/2020 13:31

Induction charger? just lay the phone on it.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 19/12/2020 15:02

I bought an Anker Powerline 2 and it's lasted well It's reinforced on the end where they usually break

BarbaraofSeville · 19/12/2020 15:05

Is this a uniquely iPhone problem?

I've always had an android phone and the only time I've had to replace a cable on a phone, kindle or other device like a smart watch is when one of the kittens have chewed them, but I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to stand up to that.

igotosleep · 19/12/2020 15:06

I’ve had iPhones for 10 years and have never had a cable break!
My DH has an android and has snapped 2, no idea how.

SoupDragon · 19/12/2020 16:17

@rslsys

Induction charger? just lay the phone on it.
Won't that only work if the phone supports wireless charging?
