...please can you tell me what a good gift would be? Budget £30

(I know it's a moral failing not to know what she wants; I'm just crap at gifts. I'm not generally a lazy / lousy friend but gifts are and always have been my blind spot).

  • 30's, married, two young kids; works pt
  • Highly educated, scientist, very well read (non fiction), rightish leaning politically while v socially aware; conscious of poverty & related issues
  • Great at baking and cooking but not much time for it
  • Very funny, kind, self depricating
  • creative / arty (as above)

Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez is my default gift. Really good and eye opening book. Bur she may have read it.

I would probably go for a diamond painting kit, a book, maybe an autobiography of someone she likes (lots of funny ones around), and some fairtrade christmas chocolates.

Have a look at Present indicative or the Literary gift company websites. Lovely science and literary gifts.

I bought a rolling pin like this for incredibly creative cooking friend, useful if kids in house too to do arty/funny things in kitchen with them.

I would google "nice gifts for great cooks" for more ideas.

A coffee table book on, for example, sculpture or architecture?

Failing that, a silly game / board game for all the family.

I am a bit like her but more lefty

Poverty Safari by Darren McGavrey was the most thought provoking book I've read in ages

I love a little bit of luxury me time kind of stuff because my life is so busy and all about looking after other people so I love really posh bath stuff eg aromatherapy associates

I would also like the leather gloves.

If they struggle to find time to cook they will struggle to find time to read books.

You guys are amazing. Thank you - I've ordered and she's sorted!
