Is this a migraine?

I always assumed a migraine meant you couldn’t look at any screen/lights and would have to lie in a darkened room. But can you get mild migraines? I had flashing vision last night and this morning woke up feeling sick, with a headache over my left eye. Took painkillers but still feel sick and have slightly “flashy” vision.

I’m going to put down my phone shortly as looking at a screen probs isn’t helping but does that sound like a mild migraine? Anything I can do to help it go or just manage with pain relief?

Conscious of sounding like a person who says they have flu when it’s just a bad cold!

What do you mean by flashy vision OP?

I think my migraines are fairly mild. I’ll get an aura over one eye that’s like a foggy tunnel vision. When that clears I have about 30 minutes until the headache kicks in (and sometimes neck ache too). I’ll generally try and sleep and it’s normally back to a mild headache/general achy feeling after about 4 hours.

Yes it sounds like a migraine.
Some are worse than others, no two migraines are the same.

Some of mine I can work through (in a classroom with 30 children), some I have to go to bed for 3 days. Then there's all the ones in between.

Sounds like a visual migraine. I used to get them quite at lot, same as my mum. Hard to fully explain but for me it was a bit like the outline of objects moved sometimes flashing lights when I blinked.

Classic migraine symptoms. Pain over one eye, nausea and vision disturbance. Have you suffered anything similar before?

Twerking9to5 · 19/12/2020 11:10

Thanks all. Yes it’s like flashing lights when I blink!

I’ve had a couple of similar occurrences this year when I think about it. I’m wondering if it’s linked to perimenopause as I’m 99% certain that’s going on at the moment!

Thank you for your replies x

And yes to the peri link. That's when I started getting migraine. It would be worth trying to see the doctor if this continues. There are some different over the counter tablets you could try or if severe you may need a prescription medication. Hope it passed soon.

Are you on the combined contraceptive pill?.

Aahotep · 19/12/2020 11:31

Sounds like a migraine to me.

Aahotep · 19/12/2020 11:33

Mine are usually not that painful, I mean I can just about function when I have to. Always on the left side of my head in 3 distinct zones. Nausea, I don't get much visual disturbance. Not every migraine is a 3 day darkened room job

Twerking9to5 · 19/12/2020 11:35

@Fluffycloudland77 I’m not on the pill - came off about a year ago.
Thank you @howdidigettobe50something, thankfully it’s manageable with painkillers at the moment. I had a dire night’s sleep on Thursday which I think may have contributed too!

@Aahotep it sounds like there’s quite a range of migraines! My friend gets them so badly she can’t move x

OP posts:
Aahotep · 19/12/2020 11:56

Yes I think that's true.
B*stards they are

PepperPotty · 19/12/2020 15:22

Mine seem to be hormone related, and always worse when I’m tired! (Especially if I then go out into bright sunlight.) is your vision ok otherwise?

Twerking9to5 · 19/12/2020 22:00

@PepperPotty my vision is usually ok. I haven’t managed to shake the sicky feeling all day, which isn’t something I’ve had before. Taken some co-codamol and heading to bed now! X

I take Sumatriptan for mine as otc stuff doesn't work for me. Really takes the nausea away

Yika · 19/12/2020 22:10

Yes sounds like migraine. I could always work through mine and look at screens etc. Just felt nauseous and had horrible throbbing headache (one-sided, behind eye) for around 48 hours. They stopped when I reached age 40 but I have a friend who started with migraines at menopause. Fatigue was always one of the main triggers for me.
