What was this mystery??

On a school trip when I was 14 we did gorge walking and it involved jumping full body into some freezing cold water at one point. When I jumped in, I emerged and was walking, so the water was chest height but my mouth was sort of frozen and stuck hanging wide open and I could not shut it. I remember trying really hard to shut it and clamp my teeth back together because it was as wide as it could possibly ever go, like a snake eating a deer and the lad I really fancied was talking to me, I cringe even now thinking of poor teenage me talking to a fit boy and being unable to stop looking like 😱

I’ve tried googling but can’t find anything.

What the hell was that?! After about a minute I was able to shut my gob again.

Not sure OP but I expect some sort of variant of a normal response to very cold water, the shock of it and the body taking a time to adjust. Exposure to very cold water limits blood flow (affects the circulatory system) and the vascular system immediately after immersion if temps are cold. This causes a number of symptoms including such as you describe. The body then adjusts after time.

I wouldn't feel embarrassed, I'm almost certain he doesn't remember something this innocuous, and he's probably no longer fit Wink. Funny how these moments stick in our minds isn't it.

Jumping into freezing water is potentially very dangerous and can even kill you. Cold water shock can cause your heart to stop, cause you to try to take a sharp breath while under water, and cause you to panic. The adults who allowed you, or made you, do this were absolute idiots.

Cold water shock. Why so many drown in reservoirs in a hot day.

Yes, cold water shock. Mouth open, trying to breathe in underwater causes most of the drowning accidents in the U.K. ( that and alcohol).

Cold water shock, it definitely sounds right. Thank you, I’m glad that mystery is solved 20yrs later! No idea why it popped in my head!

That must have been horrendous. Nightmares are made of this.
