Secondary school not returning in January

Sorry if there's already a thread on this. School have emailed with plan for virtual/online learning in January.

Poor teachers. I feel awful that this has been put upon them a day before end of term.

I thought this might happen, and I agree with the decision but it just all feels a bit bleak. Anyone else?

Are you in England?

NowellSingWe · 18/12/2020 14:39

So nice of DfE to give schools and parents notice of this, wasn't it? While threatening to take Greenwich and other authorities to court for trying to have the last week of term online Confused

cheesecrackersandcorona · 18/12/2020 14:40

@MPolsted

Are you in England?
Yes. Tier 2.

Ours go back a week later than planned. Had a letter today. What a shambles. My child will not be having any testing in school and definitely not daily. It’s a shambles.

AlexaShutUp · 18/12/2020 14:41

Is it the whole of January? From what our school has sent out, it only looked like the first week or so, but my dd is in year 11 so back after New Year as usual.

It not clear how long it'll last. Yes year 11s are back in (and keyworker's children)

From the 4th January, only yr11 and yr13 in school. Also vulnerable children. The rest taught by Teams.
11th January everyone in, testing starts.

Chipsahoy · 18/12/2020 15:06

So if we don’t consent to these two tests they have to have in the first week they go back, are they not allowed back? We won’t be seeing anyone over Christmas no friends or family and we have shopping delivered and we work from home. My dc doesn’t need a test. And not sure I wanted someone newly trained testing my child.

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/12/2020 15:14

I've had a phone call this morning asking if I want to send my DS back in on the 5th January. He has an ehcp due to autism and DH is also a key worker.
We are in Bath and North East Somerset which is tier 2.

QuantumJump · 18/12/2020 15:15

My DC's school is going online for the first week (except Y11 and Y13), everyone back on 11 Jan.

Maireas · 18/12/2020 15:24

Yes, @QuantumJump, that's the policy for all schools.

cheesecrackersandcorona · 18/12/2020 15:28

Oh ours actually hasn't mentioned testing.

That’s because they haven’t been given the details yet.

That’s allegedly next week (which you will notice is the school holidays and a couple of days before Christmas).

Maireas · 18/12/2020 15:33

It's what's happening, though, OP.

SoCrimeaRiver · 18/12/2020 15:40

Yep. We had a letter at lunchtime today. I emailed the school to thank them for their efforts this term. How dare the government land this on teachers wrung out at the end of term and ruin any Christmas break. I work in HE and know our staff have had one hell of a term, this timing is awful.

Madcats · 18/12/2020 15:41

We've just been emailed by school. Ordinarily we'd be back on the 6th, but now we're online for 3 days before returning to school on the 11th.

Any other year I'd be cheering and trying to book a week somewhere hot and sunny. As long as there are enough power sockets and decent Wi-fi.....

Oh well

Madcats · 18/12/2020 15:43

Ironically, by being at home until the 11th, DD is more likely to be around when the ONS lady turns up to do our monthly COVID swab and antibody test.

GunnerPunner · 18/12/2020 15:47

Well obviously it's not the start of term anyone wanted. My partner is in the senior leadership team and has to do some sort of work every single day, minimum of checking emails of any students testing positive or expected to or showing symptoms etc. Teachers are tired, we all are. BUT I keep thinking about refugees and people in the war. They may not have had access to anything remotely resembling an education. Our kids have all the knowledge innthe world at their fingertips.

cheesecrackersandcorona · 18/12/2020 15:50

So there's still more to come with testing in schools. Wow. That hasn't been talked about yet.

I'm NHS and I'd rather be here than in Education right now. What a nightmare.

I have vaccine booked mid January and I thought that was starting to look like 2021 was going to get better with that in mind.

OP posts:
cheesecrackersandcorona · 18/12/2020 15:51

When I say it hasn't been talked about I just mean in my Sons school. I. Not complaining about any of it. I'm just sad.

We are going to decline secondary age testing and just keep our dc off all January then reassess

They don’t need to be tested to return.

The ridiculous thing is that DSs school went online this week as they had a third of their teachers off. This worked absolutely fine Mon to weds. Any child without pc/internet went in and logged in using the school computers so they also learned online the same for everyone.

The school were told by the DfE to make all children go back in so on weds evening we got an email saying that the school had been informed they had to tell the children to come in . Luckily they had 13 teachers whose isolation finished on Thursday morning. What they would.have done otherwise I don't know

Anyway My DS who had been working fine Mon to Weds with online live lessons was isolating so couldn't go in but on Thursday the live lessons became unavailable in the morning . I imagine because all the carefully planned stuff was up in the air on Thurs am as half the children were in needing face to face lessons which hadn't been planned for and half were at home so everything needed rearranging. Then immediately afterward schools are told they will be online ( except year 11 and 13) first week back in Jan Hmm.oh the irony!!

cheesecrackersandcorona · 18/12/2020 15:57

I'm guessing it must be school dependent? About testing? Their guidelines are probably being worked upon as I type.
