Sewing/craft room revamp - help please!!

Hi all, not sure this is the best place to post so please feel free to suggest other boards!

Historically I used our box room for sewing/ hobbies. Over the last few years it hasn't been used (life gets in the way!) and has become a dumping ground ☹️

I've lost my job due to Covid and am looking at setting up properly to do my hobby as a self employed business from home.

Currently the room is painted Jade White with a similar coloured carpet. When it was just a hobby room that seemed fine.

My question is now that I want to make it a dedicated work space should I look at painting it white (possibly better for light/colour matching) and should I replace the carpet with vinyl or laminate (fewer lost pins and needles!)

Anyone working from home in a similar situation, what are your thoughts? I don't want to spend time redecorating in a colour that's going to affect what I'm working on, but white seems so bland? Would using a daylight bulb in a task lamp get over this?

Any suggestions and thoughts gratefully received...

Many thanks 💐

Hmm I don't think I would worry about redecorating personally, unless you have all the other equipment you need?

You can get LED tube lights which are a very light white light which might work for a daylight type lighting set up? They're like a modern version of fluorescent tube lights.

I think if I were setting up a craft room I would really want some good big cupboards/shelving and I think for me an extendable desk/table because I sometimes want lots of room for stuff (e.g. cutting fabric) and sometimes more room for me (e.g. fitting).

Hi Nacreous, thanks for your reply. I have a daylight task lamp, a work desk under the window and some storage already in place. I'm going to need more storage probably but it's the fact that it's shabby (was DD's bedroom ooooh 12 years ago and hasn't been redecorated/ carpeted since 😳) so definitely needs a once over! Not quite sure whether to highlight the cobwebs....

My sewing room (hobby only so can't comment on it as a work space) was south facing with white walls. Sometimes it was a bit too bright until we put wooden shutters up so light levels could be adjusted. Maybe you could add some motivational pictures or wall stickers to turn it into a space you enjoy using.

Thanks @Misstabithabean, being cold looking is one of my worries tbh. Definitely going to get the inspirational/motivational things up - it's my room 😉

Maybe some kind of warm white rather than a pure brilliant white type? I have found the Dulux light and space paints really good in the past and they do a nice collection of light colours?

Thanks Nacreous, do you think off whites would be problematic for colour matching etc? I'm leaning towards a warm off white if it won't affect the colours of the fabric etc ?

I think it would be fine as long as you make sure the room lighting e.g. ceiling light is as daylight coloured as possible. The tasklamp will help but I think ceiling bulbs too would be better. Obviously when it's actually light outside it will be fine , but this time of year when sometimes it hardly gets light at all I think you'd want the whole room with a daylight type light to avoid shadow issues?
